Giovanni Battista Alloati
Discord - Inkwell

1905 ca.

About the Item

Artist: Giovanni Battista Alloati Title: Discord - Inkwell Medium: bronze sculpture with marble base Signature: signed on the right side “G. B. Alloati” Titled in the centre “La Discordia” On the back stamp of the “Fonderia opera d’Arte Betta Corrado – Torino” The Discordia - Inkwell by Giovanni Battista Alloati is a decorative object that skilfully combines the allegorical dimension with the Secessionist treatment of volumes and lines. this sculpture presents the typical traits of Art Nouveau language, accompanied by Symbolist accents that can be seen in the sinuous handling of the bodies and in the uncanny rendering of the personification of Discordia, with its characteristic snake-shaped hair. Giovanni Battista Alloati is also known as a skilful portraitist of illustrious personalities of early 20th century Italy. In 1911 he was among the artists involved in the creation of statues of athletes for the Turin Stadium, while in the post-war period, the sinuous secessionist line gradually disappeared in favour of a balanced return to order.
