About the Item

Celebrated for his bold, origami-inspired, metal sculptures that explore psychologically complex themes, Gerardo Hacer will take over the Broadway Mall on September 14th from 36th to 39th Streets in New York City, greeting pedestrians who will walk through the colorful exhibit of two dark turquoise coyotes, two medium turquoise rabbits, a magenta elephant, a yellow dog, and a green bear cub. Fabricated from powder coated steel, the sculptures vary in size; with the largest of the series, "Coyote, Stalking", prowling over Midtown Manhattan at 14 feet long. Hacer’s introduction to the nostalgic art form began at age seven when a volunteer in one of his foster homes read, “Sadako And The Thousand Paper Cranes” by Eleanor Coerr. His reductive reinvention of the aesthetic evolved technically over decades along with its conceptual counterpart. The resulting work is an amalgamation of innocent childhood play, indirect exposure [in adulthood] to Alexander Calder’s fluid experimentation with form and [after recruitment by renown art fabricator, Peter Carlson] first hand working knowledge of Jeff Koons novel approach to materials, John McCracken’s exhaustive attention to detail and Ellsworth Kelly’s steadfast commitment to minimalism. After enduring a tumultuous upbringing, Hacer often turned to art and creativity as an escape. Choosing “Hacer” (Spanish verb: “to make”) as his new name, he broke free from his difficult past and now works as a sculptor, designing and building large-scale, origami-inspired forms in bold, solid colors. Through his work, he aims to elicit a dynamic response about the viewer’s relationship to their childhood and believes through this interaction all can begin anew. Different sizes are available (1/8, 1/4, 1/2).

  • KAWS Companion 2016 (Brown KAWS Companion)
    By KAWS
    Located in NEW YORK, NY
KAWS Brown Companion, 2016. New and sealed in its original packaging. This classic KAWS figurative sculpture was published by Medicom Japan in conjunction with the exhibition, KAWS: Where The End Starts at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. New/never displayed & accompanied by original packaging. Medium: Painted Vinyl Cast Resin. Year: 2016. Dimensions: 11 × 5 inches. New, unopened; excellent condition. Stamped on underside of foot; from a sold out edition of unknown. KAWS: Spanning the worlds of graffiti, pop art, and consumer culture, KAWS’ bodies of work are highly charged, each conveying his underlying wit, irreverence, and affection for our times. He has primarily looked to and appropriated from pop-culture animations (including The Smurfs, The Simpsons, SpongeBob, and Peanuts) to form his artistic vocabulary for his paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Now well known for his larger-than-life sculptures and hard-edge paintings that emphasize line and color, KAWS’s cast of hybrid cartoon/human characters, with similarities to popular cartoon figures and logos like Mickey Mouse and the Michelin Man, are perhaps the strongest examples of his exploration of humanity. These figures have amicable names—Chum, Companion, Accomplice—and express and provoke an array of human emotions, from sad, overwhelmed, pathetic, and weary, to shy. They reflect feelings and situations we can empathize with in presentations that are balanced with humor, heartening in their cartoon aesthetic. (source: The Modern Fort Worth).
