Heather Allen Hietala
Sounding IV - narrative of journey and change, mixed media, tapestry and vessel

2010

About the Item

A ceramic canoe shape perforated and marked emerges from a plinth next to a tapestry of blue and light brown that repeats the vertical canoe shape. The title of this mixed media work may refer to the gathering of information prior to taking action, or measuring the depth of water before going in. Metaphor and symbol in this piece offer a narrative of journey and change. Unusual three dimensional exploration of the idea of vessels, journeys, boats. The wall hanging component is quilted and hand stitched. The clay sculptural boat sits in front, its "shadow" captured in the quilted form. This is a piece designed to be exhibited above and on a mantle. Working with clay, fabric and paper, American sculptor Heather Allen Hietala evokes journeys through time. ‘The boat and paddle’ become a vessel for personal and collective memories. Allen Hietala’s work has been shown in numerous venues in the US, France and Singapore, and is held in diverse collections. She has taught and lectured in the US, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Nepal.
