About the Item
“Ariane on Panther” is the most worldwide known work of the German sculptor Johann Heinrich Dannecker, born 1758 and died 1841 in Stuttgart , pupil of Pajou and Canova.
The original statue “Ariadne aus dem Panther” (1803-1805) stand in Frankfurt Liebieghaus. , Marble H 146cm
This work inspired by classical antiquities express the progressive idea of “Wildness tamed by Beauty”, and the charmed panther’s eyes confirms this impression.
Our statue, a rather large reduction from the original, is bearing the charge of years, through his weariness may be considered positively as consistent and with the antic subject it idealized.
There is a small restoration of the tail’s base and the surface is rather rough probably because of outside exposure in past years.
But we have here a nice impressive ancient sculpture for reasonable cost.
