John Petrey
'Natale' Mixed Media Sculpturing Using Found Materials

2017

About the Item

‘Natale’ is a figurative dress sculpture mounted on base created by American artist John Petrey in 2017. Made of an undulating aluminum skirt topped with a steel bottle cap bodice, this exquisite dress sculpture mounted on a black colored base is an artistic take on the 1960’s shirtwaist. The black and white colors of the ensemble contrast as beautifully with one another as the texture of the bodice and the smoothness of the skirt. The serpentine shape of the skirt, made of an ingenious arrangement of pieces presenting various patterns, gives a great sense of flowing movement to the sculpture. This modern take on a vintage subject will make it a whimsical focal point in any home, where it will bring a nostalgic touch of elegance. John Petrey was born in Southern California in 1958 and grew up in the 60’s and 70’s during the time when television was becoming a cultural juggernaut. That experience led him to the world of advertising, via a degree in commercial photography from California’s Brooks Institute of Photography. John spent most of the 1980’s and 90’s doing commercial photography, shooting everything from cars to food to celebrities. John’s most popular pieces are dresses. Over the years his dresses have been made of a wide variety of elements from asphalt shingles, yardsticks, bottle caps, twigs, playing cards and copper sheeting among others. Today aluminum is probably his most common element as it affords a great deal of flexibility combined with strength. The vintage nature of his beautiful throwback dresses is important: “I do them purposely in a vintage look because when people look at them, young and old, it reminds them of better times. Women constantly comment to me about ‘Oh, I remember that era,’ and they remember it fondly.”

  • Hook Ups and Lay Ups
    By Cal Lane
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
Laughter, discomfort, perplexity: these are all plausible reactions to the work by sculptor Cal Lane. The artist’s most recent body of work is an affective assemblage of incongruous parts that, taken together, violate our mental patterns and expectations. Charged with contradictions, metaphor, sexual undertones, and unsettling associations, Lane’s unlikely combinations use absurdity as a way of pointing to western society’s normalized habits and conventions, often with an emphasis on gender and sexuality. For the exhibition Try Me, Lane installs a basketball court in the gallery. The two basketball hoops on opposing walls are embellished with silver-coated frames and lustrous mirrors, which serve as decorative backboards. In place of nets, women’s black lace underwear delicately hang from hoops. A decorative rug stenciled with court lines performs as the court floor. It is a mise-en-scène set in motion by viewer’s reconciliation of the individual parts to the whole, and to their original function. Panties regard themselves in the mirror or perhaps measure up their opponent, which, not without irony, is the mirror image of itself. Themes of gender and sexuality are performed and imagined in the upward voyeuristic gaze of the viewer and the expected swoosh of the ball into the net. This is further elaborated by phallic impressions formed by court lines and their likeness to a work of modernist abstraction—a movement wrought by notions of masculinity. The decorative rug’s connection to femininity and domesticity juxtaposes the rigid geometry. Lane further explores the historical gendering of technology, industry, and war in her series of wallpaper drawings, which depict war submarines on cloud patterned wallpaper. The innocence of the submarine in popular culture and its reality as a phallic war object...
