Materna discovered Carbonell in the early 1960s. He produced Carbonell's gallery catalogs and helped promote him through his public relations firm in NYC. Manuel Carbonell (1918-2011) was regarded as the last of the Cuban Master Sculptors. He was part of the generation of Cuban artists, which includes Wifredo Lam and Agustin Cardenas, that studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro", Havana Cuba. Carbonell's inexhaustible vision and his ever changing-style are the product of a brilliant talent and academic background. Ceaselessly searching for the essence of form and the absence of details, he empowered a sense of strength, monumentality and simplicity to his work. Exhibited in New York's Schoneman Gallery for over 17 years. In 1976, he presented to the White House "The Bicentennial Eagle," now part of the Smithsonian collection. SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Contemplation” is an abstract clay sculpture of a female. The figure has both arms and legs extended, but the dignified pose suggests an intimate rather than a sexual moment. The sculpture is delicately rendered, but monumental in pose and clean composition reminiscent of the English artist Henry Moore. The surface is warm and slightly rough to the touch. This sculpture is in the round and beautifully balanced geometrically with the hands clasped behind the head forming a slightly flattened polygon shape that is echoed in the positioning of the legs and draped fabric of a presumed dress. The ceramic sculptures of SunKoo Yuh are composed of tight groupings of various forms including plants, animals, fish, and human figures. While Korean art, Buddhism, and Confucian beliefs inform some aspects of his imagery, implied narratives that often suggest socio-political critiques largely drive his work. Yuh is currently Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. The Rubin Center has exhibited two monumental columns that showcase Yuh’s mastery of his complex narratives and the ceramic medium. Yuh’s work is included in the collections of the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among others.
