About the Item
This dramatic stainless steel sculpture titled "Victim of War" by Marian Owczarski depicts a falling figure reaching towards the sky. The figure is suspended by a single leg which Owczarski welded to a rectangular metal sheet; the artist's initials are welded into this base. The piece is evocative of Owczarski's own experience with war and loss.
The sculpture is in Fair-Distressed Condition. The figure has oxidized and the metal base shows signs of age and handling. The date of creation is unknown.
Marian Owczarski (1932-2010) served as Artist-in-Residence at St. Mary’s Galleria in Orchard Lake, Michigan for almost 40 years. Owczarski explained that stainless steel was his chosen medium because “steel represented the future. Plus, the melt temperature of stainless steel is nearly 5000 degrees. Stainless will be around after a nuclear holocaust.” Born in Poland, he was the only living member of his family after World War II. He began sculpting in 1945 and emigrated to the US in 1970. His works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, and reflect heavily on his experiences as a survivor of war and trauma.
