Artist's Commentary:
"The fierce, but elegant betas, have an unmatched beauty. This piece is made from a single piece of hornbeam branch from my son's property in Aiken, South Carolina. He was clearing some land, and I wanted to preserve some of its original history through a tree that knew more about the property than we ever will. As I worked the wood, it brought back wonderful memories of sitting around the campfire with my son while cooking our dinner. The sculpture brings me much happiness and satisfaction as the delicate fins of the beta are parallel and remind me of porcelain. The fish look so synchronized and when I look at it now, it takes me from a slump to encouragement and hope."
About the Artist:
Mike began creating original, one of a kind, wood sculptures when 17 years of age. He has no formal training, but an eye for the creative and the beauty of wood. After a year, he took a fifty year hiatus to pursue a family and professional career as a lawyer. He recently returned to wood sculpturing in the past two years, partly to stay positive and encouraged while experiencing life's transitions into aging. In a year and a half, he created approximately 30 sculptures. He considers it as art therapy. Although he initially created the sculptures for himself and family, others expressed admiration for the unique art and recently, he shared his first sculpture with the world by selling the cello player to a friend. She was so excited to share the cello player with her granddaughter, who plays the cello, he realized what happiness and hope art can bring to others and he wants to share his art with anyone who will appreciate and enjoy it. All of the woods have a unique history and meaning. He preserves history and memories through certain pieces of wood, by taking wood that would be destroyed and making it into something beautiful.
