About the Item

Nicole DORAY SOULARD. Animal ceramic sculptures, works centered on the forward. Nature and the study of bodies are sources of inspiration for her. She produces animals from all over the world but more particularly species from our regions. She is mainly inspired by her environment. The hands in the earth, she shapes, kneaded, model, caresses the clay until she obtains the desired shape. The technique of Raku, used by the artist after modeling and enamelling, offers interesting effects. Appearing in the 16th century to make pieces for the Tea ceremony, it was imported in Europe by the English ceramist Bernard Leach. Simple in appearance, this technique nevertheless requires a very precise cooking. A first baking, which lasts about eight hours, followed by cooling for 24 hours, gives the pieces a bright orange color. These are then placed in a bin set with sawdust and then removed twenty minutes later. After cooling, the impurities are removed with iron wool. These combined stages require from the artist a very long time of creation.

Without humanizing the model, respecting the uniqueness of each one in its biodiversity. After studying three years of art history at the Ecole du Louvre, it was with her uncle and her aunt veterinarians, that her love for animals truly took shape in the clay; as with the first models animals on the examination table...
