About

Medium: silcone, fiberglass, steel, fox fur, human hair, clothing

Hypertrichosis, colloquially called werewolf syndrome,
is a condition marked by extreme hairiness. The
Comforter is composed of two elements: a girl
with hypertrichosis who cradles a creature that
Piccinini based upon a genetically modified cow’s
udder.

In this piece, natural genetic variation is juxtaposed
with a completely artificial creature. Which element of
the sculpture is more disturbing? This piece asks us to
consider how we react to difference, aberration and
beauty.

On another level, this piece is about the role of the
outcast, and the fortitude that grows out of a
compassionate interrelationship.
