Richard MacDonald
Angelic Crystal, Terracotta

2010

About the Item

Intrigued by the stature and carriage of a particular figure, MacDonald pursued Angelic Crystal, the study of a ballerina in the studio. Inspired by a continuing appreciation of dance, the artist encountered a uniquely beautiful, exceptionally tall ballerina possessed of the elegance of a gazelle and the face of a muse. MacDonald witnessed her dancing while creating many drawings of the elements of her presence: the result is a very classic bust, whose arms stretch back like the wings of an angel to capture the elegance of her long, graceful lines.

An innovator of technological art beginning in the early 1960s, Pallas drew inspiration from his upbringing in Detroit, Michigan where he had early exposure to the automobile industry, its materials and design. He is recognized for having employed electronics and early computer technology to enable his sculptures to respond to external stimuli. Often the circuit boards specifically designed for a particular piece were, themselves, drawings.
