Bronze Woman - Wooden wall sculpture with elements of plywood, driftwood, found wood pieces, assembled and painted in bronze color. Sadie Hayms was a 'hylozoist artist'. Hylozoism is the doctrine that all matter has life. The idea for the first Hylozoist Art show was originated by Gerome Kamrowski, who taught at The Michigan University of Art. Kamrowski thought that artists should experiment with new media and techniques in order to relate art to modern architecture and landscaping. Sadie's relief paintings and sculptures have that same feeling of live and growth that is found in nature. Three dimensional surfaces catch the light in different ways at different times of the day. For her paintings and sculptures she did not only use paint, but took advantage of various elements from builders' materials to car and electrical parts, beads and found objects to surface her artwork with a strange mix of ingredients for texture, color and form. Sadie Hayms (American 1900-1991) was born in Pinsk, Russia and came to the US in 1904. After living in Charlotte and New York where she took her first steps into art in form of traditional painting classes, she moved with her husband in the early 50's to Detroit, where she took art classes at the University of Michigan School of Art and was introduced to the Detroit contemporary art scene. She started late as an artist and had her first group show in 1955. In the 60s and 70s her work was featured through solo and group shows in Detroit and Michigan. She showed together with Richard Wilt and Gerome Kamrowski, who initiated 'The Hylozoist Art Show'. In the 80's she moved to Los Angeles, where she passed away in 1991 at the age of 91.
