Sylwia Jakubowska-Szycik
WATER RIFLE - Modern obiect sculpture made of steel and fabric

2017

About the Item

Sylwia Jakubowska-Szycik is professor at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia in Gdańsk, she conducts classes in the field of sculpture and intermedia. Artist about her work: The Rifle (water hose), here an element of the weapon is the most similar to the original (the model is a rubber training weapon Ak 47, the Kalashnikov version, a cheap version of the rifle bought often for fun). Directly, through a sketch of gushing water on the wall and the title, the object was transferred to a world of innocent children's play. However, despite the use of children's colors and blue candlestick, it still remains an image of a weapon. Apart from cotton fabrics obtained from clothes (particularly children's clothes), I also appreciate the use of hand sewing. Leaving a trace, as if healing wounds... Just as a man makes a weapon to kill themselves, he uses his own hands and words to violate others, so I sew from the beginning to the end of the pistol itself, often pricking and mutilating my own hands. "The creation is an ongoing observation and reaction to reality, to what I see, what I listen to, an emotional response. It all happens through the prism of day-to-day life. This is where the impulses come from, hence the material and forms, hence the working methods and this is where my place of work can be found. I called it the strategy of practical day-to-day life. It all comes according to the rhythm of life with its most basic needs. With the personal needs of my family and those for whom I am responsible. Treating creative activity as one of these fundamental needs became a natural consequence of my choices. Art has set itself in line with many other things and tasks, it has become a component of the organism that I co-create." Sylwia Jakubowska-Szycik

Magdalena Peszkowska born in 1980 in Gdańsk, Poland. Studied in Department of Painting at Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (1999-2004). Diploma with special recognition in painting in 2004. The character of Magdalena Peszkowska's works Series Stand is like an poetic archive of memories, which call for a classification and reconstruction of the time of childhood and the intense experience of time with everything around it. Gdansk - where the artist comes from - becomes a mythical place, This city, with a very strong symbolic potential inherent in its history, needs editing from a single point of view. Magdalena Peszkowska uses her own photos or those from the family album. She transfers them to gray field blankets and camp beds with her own secret technology Then she paints on the used objects. Many of her objects show figures from the closest circle of Peszkowska, often it is herself, her family or places close to her in Gdansk. Her objects have intentional signs of use. The field blankets have a sewn-in wooden bar to hang them on the wall. The field military beds...

  • Fading pink (#1)
    By Hernan Bas
    Located in New York, NY
Hernan Bas is best known for his narratively rich scenes that feature a wide-range of references spanning art and literature, popular culture, kitsch, the occult, religion, and mythology. Across his works, Bas seeks to defamiliarize everyday experience through humor, revealing the surreal and absurd lurking beneath the mundane. In conceiving this flamingo sculpture series, Bas was inspired specifically by the 19th century novel ‘Against Nature’ by Joris-Karl Huysmans. In the novel, the main character, an astute dandy of epic proportions, decides to cover a pet tortoise's shell with ornate jewels in order to see how the light would glimmer on it as it slowly treaded across his carpets. Bas imagined a fictional character of his own, a "Florida Dandy," who would naturally want bright pink flamingos as pets. The ball and chain keep them from flying away and simultaneously constrain them to a certain territory. . . . Fading pink (#1), 2016-2017 resin, feathers, rug, galvanized metal buoy...
