About the Item
Three-dimensional high-relief panel representig the Massacre of the Innocents.
The scene takes place in an hypothetical Bethlehem in the square facing Herod’s palace. In the foreground on the left side, on two levels, there is a interupted building with central body and and two jutting lateral parts: it might be a plalace or more probably a gateway to the city. The lanscape, the palaces and the scene are painted with meticulous attention. The scene of the massacre is blody and unrestrained: Herod’s soldiers are running after women and childrens, armed with swords and daggers; womens are running away to save their children; ther are lifeless bodies of babies on the ground; dogs are tearing apart little corpses.
On the band of the frontal palace there is an inscription:”Thoma Gaudiello Fabiebat Anno 1685 Die 20 Mensis )bris”. The coeval frame is carved with a wide moulding that create a space that contains the painting and is entirely painted with leaf motifs partially covered by the patina of the time.

Active in Naples between 1688 and 1727 .
Wood sculptor and plasticizer, gaudiello is known for his rare examples of polychrome three-dimentional high-relief panels made with wood and plaster that represent views of important cities.
Preserved in International museums and as part of private collections, between the most important pieces we can mentionthe two views of port cities at the Museum of Fine Arts in boston, dated 1726 and 1727; a view of Naples ( di Romania? ) during venetian occupation in 1686, signed and dated “ Thomas Gaudiello Fecit Anno 1688”, preserved today at the convento f nuns of the Visitation od Saint Bernard in Madrid. Along with these paintings we can also remember the view of Neaples, part of a private collection.

David, left without food in the wilderness with his army, seeks relief from the wealthy Nabal, who contemptuously denies him any help, ungrateful of the benevolence he previously received from the king. Upon hearing the rejection, the ruler intends to take revenge by killing his entire lineage. Abigail, Nabal's beautiful and wise wife, decides to right the wrong and bring David plenty of food and gifts. In the king's presence the woman humbles herself, winning his forgiveness and benevolence. Soon afterwards widowed, she will in fact become his bride. The broad scene depicts the climax of the Old Testament episode, the moment when the woman prostrates herself before David and his servants prepare to deliver the gifts. The biblical event is here a pretext, as is customary in modern-age painting, for staging the colorful description of a sumptuous procession, which can be divided into two parts, almost two wings of a crowd divided specularly: on the left David with his dignitaries and the army; on the other, Abigail's retinue, handmaids, servants leading dromedaries and donkeys laden with food. The crowded group of figures is set in a natural proscenium: above a low horizon, barely hinted at by distant blue mountains, rises on the left side a craggy rocky cliff, the shelter of the army led by the ruler. The 'somatic intonation of the characters, as well as the choice of metallic chromatics and the play of light on the shiny fabrics refer to a clear Flemish matrix, particularly the influence of the frothy and sumptuous painting of Rubens and Van Dyck.
