About the Item

Artist Treacy Ziegler is a lover of nature and animals. Her studio is deep in the woods and she casts her own bronze there. Working in the lost wax method, Ziegler casts her bronzes in her own studio skipping the formality of a foundry that most artist need to depend on. The result is that it is only her hands creating her sculpture from the clay to the patina. Ziegler's surface has a painted look unlike any bronze we have encountered previously. The method is Hot polychrome patina: It is important to point out that the color of the bronze are a hot patina. The bronzes are not painted. Ziegler uses acids such as copper nitrate or ferric nitrate for the patina. " I make the solution myself placing a jar of concentrated nitrate acid in the driveway - my driveway is in the woods. Then I drop a piece of copper into the nitrate acid (and run!) This will create a potent solution of copper nitrate. Once it is "spent" - no longer fuming - I add water. I do the same for making ferric nitrate, but drop a piece of iron into the nitrate acid. The ferric nitrate when brushed onto the sculpture with a blowtorch will create an ochre surface; the copper nitrate will produce a green surface. Upon that surface, I either add pigments to the acid solution, or heat a different solution of pigment burning it into the bronze with the blowtorch. I can use whatever pigment I want in this process. " Many sculptors do not use this pigmented patina technique. It demands the same kind of understanding of color harmony that is required of painters. The title of an essay by Martin Heidegger - analyzing the relationship between language and existence/being...."language is the house of our being".
