16th Century Cameo Pendant of Christ the Redeemer in a Gilt Bronze Frame

16th century

About the Item

A finely carved 16th or early 17th century large hard stone pendant cameo of Christ the Redeemer in profile. Set in period a gilt bronze frame. Possibly Italian. The profile view of Christ has been traditionally associated with an emerald cameo engraved with the vera effigies (“true image”) of Christ said to have been given to Pope Innocent VIII by the Sultan Bajazet II. Variants of this profile image circulated in medals, prints, and other media. Here Christ’s archaic profile and blank eyes imbue him with an ideal beauty, which would have been understood to represent the Redeemer’s divine nature.

Canova sculpted the marble lions for the monumental tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s, Rome in 1792 Canova Lions refers to the pair of copies of lion sculptures by Antonio Canova. When Canova created the sculptures in 1792, he installed them on the tomb of Pope Clement XIII. The marble sculptures are some of the most prominent features in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Given the intricacies of creating the original Canova lions, some artists created molds and replicated them. A good example is the pair of lion sculptures...
