About the Item

Description: A Spanish Gothic Statue of Saint Mary Magdalene, Late 15th Century, polychromed wood Statue: Saint Mary Magdalene Object Type: Statuette Artist, Sculptor / Creator: Unknown Place of Origin: Spain Period: Late 15th Century Materials and Techniques: Polychromed wood Categories: Christianity Style: Late Gothic Dimensions: H. 49 cm D. 12 cm W. 14 cm History: Mary Magdalene was a woman of light morals from Magdala. The Bible gives little information about her. She became one of the most faithful followers of Jesus. Shortly after his crucifixion, Mary Magdalene discovered his empty tomb. She recognised Christ in the gardener a little later. When she embraced him, he spoke in Latin Noli me tangere, 'Do not touch me', because he was leaving earthly existence. Other stories about St Mary Magdalene emerged in the Middle Ages, such as that of Simon of Bethany inviting Christ to dinner. To Simon's irritation, a sinful woman anointed Christ's feet, defending her and telling her that all her sins were forgiven. She was said to be Mary Magdalene. In representations, she therefore often wears an anointing pot. After Christ's death, Mary Magdalene did thirty years of penance in a desert, dressed in her own long hair. Seven times a day, angels carried her up to feed her with heavenly music. Physical Description: The Saint stands holding the pot of ointment in her left hand. She wears a tight fitting light blue dress with sleeves; over this is a red mantle which is hanging over her left shoulder. Her long hair lies over both shoulders. The flesh is painted in natural colours, the red mantle is lined with blue; her dress as well as her mantel is with an ochre gold border. The back is only roughly finished, as the figure would have stood against a wall, or within an altarpiece. It appears to be in its original state. Historical Significance: The facial features and drapery which envelopes the body point to Spanish origin.
