Symbolist Wrought Iron Sculpture of a Snake coiled around a Tree
• Height, ca. 13 cm

Extraordinarily fine wrought iron work by an unknown, most talented craftsman. ... Take your time and look closely ... so many different forging and decoration techniques in one piece!
I sourced this intriguing object decades ago on an antiques market in Switzerland and neither the previous owner, nor I know for what purpose it might have been intended - Maybe part of something larger ?
I have come to think that it might well be master black smith’ / journeyman's work, demonstrating all the various techniques and processes possible when forging and shaping hard iron.
I have used it as a paperweight, respectively as a desk ornament and enjoyed it when working in my office.
As far as the subject matter goes, I would say it most likely depicts the whispering Serpent in the Garden of Eden
The exact age or the original place of origin of this object are unknown to me - Although it looks a lot earlier, I will describe it as European and date it to the late 19th/ early 20th century - say 1890-1920.

Shown is a scene from an ancient Greek comedy play. The previous owner has noted on the back, that this image was copied from an ancient Greek stone relief. François-Édouard Picot was born on the 10th of October in 1786 in Paris, France. He studied with various masters and became well known for his historical and mythological subjects. In 1812 he won the second prize in the Prix de Rome competition and after that success, went on to exhibit at the Paris Salon, where in the year 1819 he won a first-class medal for his neoclassical L'Amour et Psyché, which today hangs in the Louvre in Paris. He regularly exhibited his work in the salon up to 1839. He taught several young great artists at his elitist studio and was known for accepting only very few students, which included William Bouguereau, Gustave Moreau, Cabanel and Paul Seignac...Category

- NautilusLocated in Oswestry, GBThe Nautilus shell is an excellent example of mathematics inherent within lifeforms of the natural world. As Davies consistently uses the 'golden ratio' (1:1.618) to proportion his work, he thought it important to exemplify this in his subject matter. The Fibonacci sequence (where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers) and the logarithmic spiral are also inherent here. The bronze shell is mounted on a black granite base in a way that creates an optical illusion suggesting it is levitating above the base. This bronze Nautilus...Category
