About the Item
How an object relates to its function greatly determines a society’s view and/or perception of that object. Most objects directly mirror their utilitarian role in their qualities and characteristics. I am interested in exploring the hierarchical systems of value that exist within the objects that surround us, and their cultural significance. While our commodity driven society alienates the very labour force that fastens it in place, products have become less about being functional objects and more about being cultural movements. By relying on industrial methods of manufacturing to alter or remove the function of a seemingly unimportant mass-produced object, I am able to subvert its intentioned existence from one of utility to cultural signifier and icon. Through investigating an object’s cultural and political economies I am addressing issues of representation, value, and perception. Transcribing everyday commodities and by-
products, into the re-proposed artifacts of our mass culture, questioning their initial creation and the ideologies behind them.

Zeke Moores
Heavily influenced by his extensive background in fabrication, blacksmithing and foundry; Moores’ work is preoccupied by the cultural significance and hierarchical systems of value that exist within the objects that surround us. To this end, Moores’ re-proposes and re-fabricates everyday objects, exploring social and cultural economies. Currently, Moores is showing nationally and internationally, while teaching at the University of Windsor, in Windsor Ontario, and Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.

- Hook Ups and Lay UpsBy Cal LaneLocated in Montreal, QuebecLaughter, discomfort, perplexity: these are all plausible reactions to the work by sculptor Cal Lane. The artist’s most recent body of work is an affective assemblage of incongruous parts that, taken together, violate our mental patterns and expectations. Charged with contradictions, metaphor, sexual undertones, and unsettling associations, Lane’s unlikely combinations use absurdity as a way of pointing to western society’s normalized habits and conventions, often with an emphasis on gender and sexuality. For the exhibition Try Me, Lane installs a basketball court in the gallery. The two basketball hoops on opposing walls are embellished with silver-coated frames and lustrous mirrors, which serve as decorative backboards. In place of nets, women’s black lace underwear delicately hang from hoops. A decorative rug stenciled with court lines performs as the court floor. It is a mise-en-scène set in motion by viewer’s reconciliation of the individual parts to the whole, and to their original function. Panties regard themselves in the mirror or perhaps measure up their opponent, which, not without irony, is the mirror image of itself. Themes of gender and sexuality are performed and imagined in the upward voyeuristic gaze of the viewer and the expected swoosh of the ball into the net. This is further elaborated by phallic impressions formed by court lines and their likeness to a work of modernist abstraction—a movement wrought by notions of masculinity. The decorative rug’s connection to femininity and domesticity juxtaposes the rigid geometry. Lane further explores the historical gendering of technology, industry, and war in her series of wallpaper drawings, which depict war submarines on cloud patterned wallpaper. The innocence of the submarine in popular culture and its reality as a phallic war object...Category

- Oblivion (Dead Astronaut #2)By Brandon VickerdLocated in Montreal, QuebecPurposely diverse, my work straddles the line between high and low culture, acting as a catalyst for critical thought and addressing the failed promise of a modernist future predicated on boundless scientific advancement. Whether through craftsmanship, the creation of spectacle, or humour, my goal is to provoke the viewer into questioning the dominate myth of progress ingrained in Western world views. A satellite resting lifeless in a crater, recalling a modern day Icarus whose faith in technology lead to hubris and imminent demise as he fell back to earth; a ghost clad in chrome, cloaked in the reflective guise of the machine it seems fit to haunt; machines sporting deer antlers and locked in never ending combat – these are just some of the motifs I utilize to articulate my concerns about technology and failure. Elements of this work appear as wonderfully crude relics of past visions of the future, as vehicles or potential doomsday weapons mirroring the excesses of the cold war and the space race, while also recalling proto-modernist sculpture of the same period. I attempt to highlight our nostalgia for a past, when science held the promise of a limitless future, and not the very strange and often frightening world of tomorrow we find ourselves living in today. My work is a lexicon of no-longer-relevant representation created with a critical eye towards modernism, but also empathy for a tarnished idealism. In the past several years my exhibited projects have been diverse in form and content, including site specific interventions, kinetic sculpture, public performances and object based sculpture. My public installations deliberately do not reveal themselves as sculpture, but seek to insert an anomaly into the viewer’s experience of the everyday. Projects such as Northern Satellite trigger a discourse centered on our conflicting ways of understanding landscape by creating a narrative where a Global Positioning Satellite has collided with the earth. In gallery exhibitions I engage the audience through employing the language of monumental figurative sculpture by subverting dominant cultural narratives by creating monuments to popular culture characters (Dead Astronaut...Category
