About the Item

Masayuki Nagare (1923 – 2018) rose to prominence in 1960's New York, becoming one of the most accomplished artists of his generation. Born in Japan to an academic family, his work reflects his early years studying Shintoism, Buddhism and martial arts, and his later apprenticeship to a master sword-smith in Kyoto. The artist's enduring, metaphoric forms demonstrate carving techniques that he developed and mastered.

  • Bachi
    By Masayuki Nagare
    Located in New York, NY
Masayuki Nagare’s first bachi was created in 1971. The bachi is one of the artist’s most significant and monumental sculptural forms. The form was inspired by the pick used to play the traditional Japanese Shamisen lute, instilling the work with great ritualistic significance. For Nagare, the bachi is interwoven with his own historical connection to the samurai tradition; the form epitomizes a concept of beauty mirrored...

The Nautilus shell is an excellent example of mathematics inherent within lifeforms of the natural world. As Davies consistently uses the 'golden ratio' (1:1.618) to proportion his work, he thought it important to exemplify this in his subject matter. The Fibonacci sequence (where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers) and the logarithmic spiral are also inherent here. The bronze shell is mounted on a black granite base in a way that creates an optical illusion suggesting it is levitating above the base. This bronze Nautilus...
