Italian Silvana Cenci Signed Mid Century Modern Steel Gold Explosion Sculpture
By Silvana Cenci
Located in Surfside, FL
Silvana Cenci, internationally renowned explosive sculptor, died October 1, 2000 at her home in Gray.
Ms. Cenci, who was born in Florence, Italy, before World War II, married Stuart Church and moved to the U.S. permanently in 1959. She lived in Boston for many years, where she was a founder of the Brookline Art Center and a founding member of Summerthing. She exhibited widely throughout Europe and the U.S., and her work is in many museums and public and private collections.
After moving to the States, Ms. Cenci began working with new technologies from the aircraft industry, and with explosives. She moved to Northwood, NH, in the early 60s, and pursued and perfected her revolutionary experimentation with explosive sculpture in stainless steel. A native of Italy, she lived most of her life in America where she became internationally known, primarily for using dynamite to blast images into stainless steel and finishing some pieces with pure gold. The pieces created with dynamite were often utilized by architects. One piece titled “Wheels in Motion” hung in Boston’s South Station.

Centaure (Centaur), 1965
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Created in 1956, this 23K gold medallion is stamped with the artist's signature 'Picasso', the François and Pierre Hugo reference number '1439', and the goldsmith's mark and a French mark on verso. Numbered 1/2 and stamped ‘EXEMPLAIRE D’ARTISTE’; this work is one of two author’s proofs , aside from the edition of 20 and two artist’s proofs.
In the 1950’s and 1960’s Picasso initiated a collaboration with renowned goldsmith François Victor-Hugo. Together, they created a series of medallions all in gold based after original designs from Picasso. Much to Hugo’s dismay, Picasso initially refused to sell these works for profit and instead kept them as private treasures. However Picasso gave in to Hugo’s persistence and in 1967and authorized Hugo to make a small, 'numbered edition’ of each for sale. They were not sold publicly but rather dispatched to their respective buyers and so they attracted almost no publicity, making them quite rare. In fact, few outside of Picasso’s inner circle knew about their existence. Each gold medallion was individually selected, designed and approved by Picasso, revealing the special attachment the artist had towards the medallions.
This image is a splendid adaptation of Picasso’s ceramic work Centaur, 1956. The mythical creature becomes even more fantastical given the lustrous gold coloring of the medallion. Frolicking in the center, the centaur appears to jump, as if greeting its viewers. The carefully rendered lines and dots exaggerate the centaur’s movement. Playful and beguiling, Picasso’s design demonstrates his mastery of a multitude of mediums.

Buddha, bronze sculpture by ace sculptor, student of RamKinkar Baij Sharbari Dutta
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
K.S. Radhakrishnan - Krishna - HT : 10.5 x W : 8 x CIR : 20 inches
Bronze Sculpture.
Buddha, bronze sculpture by ace sculptor K.S. Radhakrishnan, student to Great Indian Masters RamKinkar Baij and Sharbari Dutta.
Style :
K.S Radhakrishnan is one of the most notable among the new generation of sculptors. Like many of his contempories he is a figurative sculptor, but his preference for modelling and bronze casting sets him apart from the rest of them. Recharging age old sculptural processes with a new sensibility, thus is the singular challenge he brings to modern Indian sculpture. And this makes him a modernist - who approaches his work with discernible ambition and considerable aplomb while steering clear of brinkmanship.
Radhakrishnan's works often drawn from the emotions and myths of the Hindu gods, such as Shiva, Kali and Radha. His sculptures are often larger than life-sized; placed in the outdoors, they evoke a superhuman atmosphere. Over the years, Radhakrishnan has experienced with alternate sculpting mediums, working in molten bronze, beeswax and Plaster of Paris. The physical process of working with the materials becomes a performance in itself. The sculpture is the product of a tactile engagement with his medium.
With celebration of sensuality as one of its running themes, his works is at once both intimate and universal in its appeal. A personal commemorative sculpture, with a scale and presence that holds well in natural settings, his work has found permanent home in a number of public collections all over the world.
