Lachaise, Gaston. TORSO, CLASSIC TORSO, or OGUNQUIT TORSO. Bronze, 1927.
Incised "Lachaise" on the left side. 11 1/4 x 7 x 2 1/2 inches, attached to a base 4" tall.
There was no definitive edition made of this work; there are numerous casts of this sculpture, with varied patinas or finishes such as nickel plating, and varied methods of attachment to various kinds of bases. Some have signatures, others don't. This example has evidence of being tooled by foundry carftsmen to bring up details and highlights, indicating that it is not a mass-produced reproduction (some of Lachaise's sculptures are being reproduced and marketed, but this is not one of them). The patina is rich. All this said, we have not been able to authenticate it as being a lifetime cast or a cast authorized by the widow or the Lachaise Foundation.
