About the Item

"Red Tulips" by Joana P. Cardozo is an elegant, photography-based sculpture featuring a lovely bouquet of tulips. This delightful centerpiece is made from taking a photograph of a tulip bouquet and laser-cutting it into black matte acrylic. Part of the series "Plastic Flowers Don't Die," this work stands as a natural progression from Cardozo's previous "Blueprints" work, in which she created 2D collages of people's homes with silhouette photographs of items found in each residence. According to the artist, "Plastic Flowers Don't Die is a commentary on the dissonance created by our attachments in an impermanent world. Humans are averse to change, do not want to grow old, do not want to leave their comfort zones, do not want to die. I, too, am resistant to changes, but flowers are fleeting and shadows are ephemeral. By photographing, cutting, and arranging these flower shadows in a fixed manner, i.e., laser-cut black acrylic, I aim to constitute permanence on both the flowers that will die and the shadows that will fade." "Red Tulips" was featured in the 2020 Houston Center for Photography Print Exhibition and Auction. Joana P. Cardozo is a Brazilian visual artist based in Los Angeles and Sao Paulo. Her photographs create unconventional portraiture by examining the relationship amongst domestic spaces, their inhabitants and their objects. Her acrylic installations discuss the futility of human attachments in an impermanent world. Cardozo's work has most recently been exhibited at Texas Contemporary Art Fair (Houston), Foto Relevance (Houston), Klompching Gallery (New York), San Francisco Bay International Photo Show (San Francisco), and Rencontres d’Arles (France). Cardozo holds an LL.M. from King's College London (UK). She graduated from the International Center of Photography in 2015 and is an MFA candidate in Photography & Media at California Institute of the Arts.
