About the Item
Birthworks” Deconstruction/Reconstruction”
This steel fabrication and limestone carving is part of my “Birthworks” series. Each work in the series celebrates rebirth or regeneration. In particular, the once great, powerful, industrial cities, such as my hometown of Detroit are experiencing a renaissance. This is a visual narrative of that process. The steel, industrial looking elements have a nickel plating which gives them a clean, uniform look that you might imagine on new construction or possibly a medical device or hardware. That metal work cradles a carved limestone form which in its organic, biomorphic form represents a city, project or program in a stage of transformation, not quite yet defined. The title, Deconstruction/Reconstruction, references the fact that rebuilding is a process of change, not necessarily having to start from the ground up but eliminating that which does not work, deconstruction, to make way for that which you hope will work, reconstruction.
