About

"Ballerhino" is figurative whimsical animal sculpture with a mathematical intelligence of Topology to create elegant forms of rhino figure. This dancing rhino sculpture is made of more than 100 slices of fiber board wood assembled by hand. The size is 15.75" x 8.25" x 8.66" (H x W x D) or 40 x 21 x 22 cm. Duhamel combines his remarkable sculpting skill with the idea of geometric properties and spatial relations. Duhamel creates his figures digitally and then uses topographic tools to deconstruct the shape on a flat surface. From there, he uses laser technology to cut fiber board wood. Each of his sculpture consists of over 100 laser cut sheets, each of which is then meticulously assembled by hand to create a form of animal figure. This well calculated layering technique results in an irregular texture while a surprising level of anatomical details is still suggested and wonderful highlights created. People are often fascinated by their fluctuating lights, or by the translucence of his plexiglass work, imbuing a resolutely contemporary texture to his rather classical and academic shapes. In regards to his selection of material, Duhamel likes using a humble industrial material and turning it into a work of art. The advantage of MDF is that its thickness is perfectly regular. Unlike timber it will not shrink, split nor warp and the sculptures are very durable. It does not like moisture however and the sculpture must be kept dry at all time. He uses PVA glue to assemble the MDF slices. A sequence number of each sheet is engraved on each slice by the laser to tell the artist which order to assemble the slices. Such sequence numbers are sometimes still visible in the final piece, as a memento of the process. Four alignments pin holes are also made by the laser to help to find the proper offset position and align each slice correctly with the previous one. With his exceptional attention to detail, Duhamel is also very particular about his materials. Fibre board wood is made by recycling a natural resource. It is denser than plywood and much stronger than normal particle board. Being laminated, the structure is very rigid and acquires great strength and stability. It will not bend, expand or split as timber would. Once assembly completed, each artwork is sealed with 4 layers of a marine grate vanish to protect it from the element. Glued MDF is very durable and very stable if kept dry. However, the surface can be easily damaged if banged, bumped or bashed. Small parts such as long limbs and fingers can be fragile and must be handled with care. The sculpture is also available in different material and colors for example translucent yellow plexiglass, translucent orange plexiglass, and opaque black plexiglass. The plexiglass sculpture can be displayed outdoor. Please contact us for details of plexiglass Ballerhino.
