About the Item

While Richard Minsky’s training is in classical bookbinding, his artworks are anything but typical of the medium. Like so many artists before him, Minsky has learned the rules-in his case, the artistry of classical bookbinding- only to break them. Subverting the signatures, endpapers, and cloth of tradition, Minsky intersperses books with gasmasks, shackles, police badges, reliquaries for book ashes, and aphoristically titled tomes, with his more conventional works covered in intricate snakeskin patterns, elaborate gold leaf, and rich-marbling. While using vastly different materials, Minsky shares commonalities with the American potter George Ohr, whose elaborate clay creations were simultaneously a revelation of the material’s possibilities and at odds with a more conventional history of claywork. Joseph Cornell also used books as a point of departure from established meanings and functions, but was not the creator of those raw materials he used in his art. Minsky is unique as both an originating craftsman and defiler of one of the great revelations of human progress, the bound book. Using his vast expertise and stature, the artist simultaneously expands and ridicules our perceptions, challenging the very thought that books are strictly utilitarian or assuredly obsolete. Richard Minsky was born in New York in 1947. His interest in bookbinding was established early when, at 13, he received his first printing-press. Minsky graduated cum laude from Brooklyn College and received his masters in economics from Brown University. He briefly pursued a Ph.D. from New York’s New School for Social Research, but left after two years to follow his interests in bookbinding, art and music. Minsky studied under the master bookbinder Daniel Gibson Knowlton, who he met at the Rockefeller Library at Brown. In 1974, Minsky established the Center for Book Arts in New York, a first-of-its-kind institution, which specialized in contemporary book-art and classical techniques of bookbinding. In the niche realm of his passion, Minsky has had numerous accolades. He was a 1978 US/UK Bicentennial Fellow in Visual Art by the National Endowment for the Arts and the British Council, and the recipient of a 1996 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Minsky has given numerous lectures and taught extensively. Exhibitions include solo shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Syracuse University Library, Yale University and Allan Stone Gallery. His work is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, The Morgan Library, The Getty Center, and the Rare Book Room of the New York Public Library. The artist’s archives have been donated to Yale University.
