About the Item

Robert A. Butler (b. 1955–) Raised in Boston, MA, Robert Butler began his silversmithing career at seventeen in Clerkwell, London (1972). He studied in the UK for the next five years before returning to his hometown and opening his first workshop - one of seven. Butler was trained traditionally, using early English techniques and he was heavily influenced by English design and Japanese metal arts as well. English silver with its exceptional technical quality is often stiff or predictable, whereas Japanese silver is delightful but not technically as functional. Both are subject to tradition which often makes them derivative of the past. As an American in England, Robert developed his own sense of design giving him a unique perspective on silver. Robert Butler currently has pieces in the contemporary silver collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, as well as many private collections. Robert currently resides in Miami, FL with his wife, after relocating his workshop in 2013. His artwork is finding a new niche in the Miami community, pushing the boundaries between innovation and technique. *This sterling silver vase draws inspiration from a collection of shells and the line between sand and water. The vase’s original form was a flat, round disc hand hammered, raised, into it’s round to square form. and finally the shells and wavelets were added. The shells are individually formed from the wall of the vase using the ancient hand techniques of chasing and repoussé, to push out and model the silver in relief. Robert Butler’s goal was to capture — with originality — the feel of each shell and coral, as well as the ebb and flow of water at the tide line. hand hammered, raised, into it’s round to square form and finally Borrowing form and technique from Japanese metal work but not being restrained by convention, Butler strives to create a fresh and alive interpretation of the organic beauty within nature.
