About the Item
Simon Shepherd, Phed
Wall-mounted, hollow concrete heart sculpture
Hand-signed by the artist
Original artwork
40 x 30 x 20 cm
This wall-mounted, sculptural work is in the shape of a large heart which appears to be made of brick and covered in concrete render. However the bricks are thin ceramic tiles, laid on a hollow fibreglass shell, meaning the work is lighter than expected, and easily wall mounted with the use of a backing plate provided. The work has an urban feel, suggesting inner city decay. The graffiti refers to an underground street artist who met an untimely death.
Brighton-based sculptor Simon Shepherd finds the similarities between two seemingly different objects and brings them together to highlight their unexpected connection in appearance and often in essence. It’s the only thing that still makes sense these days, he believes, “in a world of confusion and contradiction”. Thus, he sheds light on new possible meanings, sharing a different side of the story everyone is either involved in, talking about or consuming as part of an unquestioned routine.
