About

Guilded specialises in artists and makers working materials, natural or man-made, in new and intriguing ways. Our find of the year was this series of work by artist Suzi Joel.

Fluster is one of a series of pieces by this artist, created with FLUSTER FOLIACEA - HORN WRACK. Horn Wrack is a bryozoan that grows all around the cold and temperate waters of the North Atlantic seaboard and is collected locally by the artist as shown in the photographs. At first it is easy to mistake for seaweed but in texture is like a flat dried sponge.

The Fluster series is the latest in the oeuvre of this artist, whose creative history is interwoven with a variety of materials through which she explores the marriage of elements and process of attachment. Her thought process contemplate the meaning of attachment as binding and uniting elements, and through association changing the significance leaving interpretation of her work open to the viewer.

Fluster is itself an organic material that binds itself to a substrate such as rock and grows, and when it runs out of space grows upward, its form resembling a seaweed. Yet it can be detached during a storm and washed up. It is Joel’s way that in this she sees multiple layers of meaning. In the same way humans relationships are a form of attachment, and a strong tide can lengthen ties, we are equally vulnerable to detachment by storms. Yet, the joy of being human is our ability to reattach and form relationships in new ways, and in uniting the individual clusters of Fluster collected on the beach after storms they can are understood in a new way.

A little known aspect of history is the craze in Victorian times for women collecting sea weed.
In researching the preservation qualities of Fluster Foliacea we discovered the perfectly preserved 150 year old collection of a Margaret Getty, a Victorian woman and author of the definitive tome “British sea weeds” at St. Andrew’s University in Scotland.
Amateur science became hugely popular for women who in a time of strict social and moral conduct created the democratisation of natural history by crossing social barriers and meeting on the seashore. The day Charlotte Bowater of Guilded first met the artist and 150 years after Margaret Gatty, two women connected while collecting and discussing Fluster. Now we are in 2017 we aim to build connections with women all over the world, connecting thanks to this extraordinary organism that knows no borders or language other than temperature and tide.
