To Find Each Other, We Have to Leave Our Depths; To Survive, We Can Not Stay

About the Item

Original Contemporary Sculpture Wood, plastic whale, plastic squid, dyes, pigmented finish, clear finish Artist's Commentary: "The sperm whales of the world consume more squid each year by mass than the mass of the human population of the planet. It's a lot of squid. They're almost constantly hunting squid. What you may not have known is that there is some evidence giant squid (some as long as adult sperm whales) also hunt sperm whales. While this is dubious and unproven, if true it would be almost the only example in the world of two animals hunting one another. And I love the metaphorical potential of it, so here we go. The two creatures, poetically known as "Leviathan" and "Kraken," have been the subjects of loads of paintings, poems, and sailors' stories. Our popular imagination has an image of these two monsters of the sea battling at the surface. Unfortunately for the squid, this is probably near the end of the fight. The giant squid is at home at depth. Near the surface, dissolved gasses in its blood will come out of solution and cause embolism, which will kill the animal. The sperm whale, a mammal, has an incredible capacity for breath holding and diving, but eventually it has to breathe air at the surface. The winner of this epic struggle is not the one who rips and tears, but the one who holds the other too long outside their comfort zone. Neither can survive in the other's home." Like life, Todd McCollister's work puts ordinary characters in extraordinary situations. Many of them are explorers or adventurers, like all of us out in the world trying to achieve goals or rewards without clear rules and directions. They bravely face isolation, defeat, adversity, and success. They might even be absent, for the moment, from their own story. Some of their tasks may be puzzling, some are done badly, and some are alarmingly adept. Most have a sincere optimism that comes from fairy tales, magic realism, and old-fashioned legends. McCollister earned a BFA in Sculpture and Photography in 1996 from Texas Christian University and an MFA in Sculpture in 2000 from Stony Brook University. He then moved to New York City, first pursuing Sculpture and shifting to Furniture in 2006. In 2014 he brought what he learned back to his hometown of Omaha, NE, and founded Long Grain Furniture. Since the Pandemic, his focus has shifted back to Sculpture, his first passion. He is an active member of the Omaha art community and believes in supporting his fellow artists as a path to everyone’s success. He’s currently running a monthly event series called “Final Fridays at Todd’s,” aimed at bringing the Omaha art community together to make us all stronger, through networking and sharing experience and information.
