From a Murmur to a Storm, Original Contemporary Wooden and Wire Sculpture

2022

About the Item

From a Murmur to a Storm, Original Contemporary Wooden and Wire Sculpture 24" x 13" x 13" (HxWxD) Wood, Wire, Painted Wooden Beads This conical wooden sculpture by artist Todd McCollister brings a dynamic yet balanced composition. There is both contrast and harmony between the smooth wood of the center cone and the more industrial and organically sculpted wire that encircles and ascends the structure. A small tree juts out the side of the implied mountainside, with its leaves, depicted by small painted wooden beads, are shown being swept off of its branches and carried in a current that travels up to the mountain peak. Artist Commentary: Murmuration is one of the most beautiful things in nature. About the Artist: Like life, Todd McCollister's work puts ordinary characters in extraordinary situations. Many of them are explorers or adventurers, like all of us out in the world trying to achieve goals or rewards without clear rules and directions. They bravely face isolation, defeat, adversity, and success. They might even be absent, for the moment, from their own story. Some of their tasks may be puzzling, some are done badly, and some are alarmingly adept. Most have a sincere optimism that comes from fairy tales, magic realism, and old-fashioned legends. McCollister earned a BFA in Sculpture and Photography in 1996 from Texas Christian University and an MFA in Sculpture in 2000 from Stony Brook University. He then moved to New York City, first pursuing Sculpture and shifting to Furniture in 2006. In 2014 he brought what he learned back to his hometown of Omaha, NE, and founded Long Grain Furniture. Since the Pandemic, his focus has shifted back to Sculpture, his first passion. He is an active member of the Omaha art community and believes in supporting his fellow artists as a path to everyone’s success. He’s currently running a monthly event series called “Final Fridays at Todd’s,” aimed at bringing the Omaha art community together to make us all stronger, through networking and sharing experience and information.
