St. Matthias - German school, c. 1500

c. 1500

About the Item

Sculpted in limewood We'd like to thank dr. Michael Rief for his advice. This sculpture represents Saint Matthias, one of the apostles chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. Crafted with meticulous detail and devotion, this sculpture stands as a testament to the artistic and religious fervor of the era. Carved from wood, the sculpture of Saint Matthias portrays him in a dignified stance, holding symbols reflective of his apostolic identity. In one hand, he clasps a book, symbolizing his commitment to the teachings of the faith and his role as a bearer of divine knowledge. In the other hand, he grips an axe, an emblematic attribute referring to the tradition of his martyrdom, depicting the instrument of his eventual execution.
