Old Masters Art

We would like to thank Juliette Parmentier-Courreau of the Custodia Foundation for her welcome and support during the consultation of Glomy’s Journal des Ouvrages. This spectacularly large "feuille de desseins ajustés" commissioned by François Boucher from Jean-Baptiste Glomy is emblematic of the painter's art and mastery of rocaille. It is also fully representative of the taste of this period in the field of decorative arts. The largest of these three drawings, placed at the bottom of the composition, is particularly interesting: dating from around 1756, it constitutes a modello (apparently unpublished) for the frontispiece of the "Catalogue des tableaux de Monsieur de Julienne"), preserved in the Morgan Library in New York. 1. François Boucher, the master of French rocaille The extraordinary career of Francois Boucher was unmatched by his contemporaries in versatility, consistency and output. For many, particularly the writers and collectors who led the revival of interest in the French rococo during the last century, his sensuous beauties and plump cupids represent the French eighteenth century at its most typical. His facility with the brush, even when betraying the occasional superficiality of his art, enabled him to master every aspect of painting – history and mythology, portraiture, landscape, ordinary life and, as part of larger compositions, even still life. He had been trained as an engraver, and the skills of a draftsman, which he imbued in the studio of Jean-Francois Cars (1661 – 1738), stood him in good stead throughout his career; his delightful drawings are one of the most sought-after aspects of his oeuvre. As a student of Francois Lemoyne (1688 - 1737), he mastered the art of composition. The four years he spent in Italy, from 1727-1731, educated him in the works of the masters, classics and history, that his modest upbringing had denied him. On his return to Paris in 1734, he gained full membership of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture with his splendid Rinaldo and Armida (Paris, Musée du Louvre). Although, throughout his career, he occasionally painted subjects taken from the Bible, and would always have considered himself first as a history painter, his own repertoire of heroines, seductresses, flirtatious peasant girls and erotic beauties was better suited to a lighter, more decorative subject matter. The panel has been attributed both to Joan de Joanes and his son Vicente Macip Comes (Valencia, ca. 1555 – 1623). Provenance: Private Collection, England, by 1886 (according to stencils on the reverse) Private Collection, New Jersey, until 2010 The Veil of Veronica, often called the Sudarium, is one of the most important and well-known relics of Christ. According to legend, Veronica offered Christ her veil as he carried the cross to his crucifixion. He wiped his face with the veil, which left the cloth miraculously imprinted with his image. Depictions of Christ’s face on a veil, or simply images that focused in on Christ’s face, were treasured objects of religious devotion. The popularity of this format also inspired similar images of the face of the Virgin. The iconographic type of the present painting is known as the Veronica of the Virgin, which was especially favored in late medieval and early Renaissance Spain. Distinct from the images of the suffering Christ, the Veronica of the Virgin is based on the legend that Saint Luke painted a portrait of Mary from life. Although scholars have sometimes mistaken them for portraits of Queen Isabella I of Castile (known as Isabel la Católica) or as a depiction of Saint Maria Toribia (known as María de la Cabeza, or, Mary of the Head), paintings like this one were clearly intended as images of the Virgin in the style of Saint Luke’s lost portrait. The Veronica of the Virgin was especially popular in Valencia, and depictions of this subject produced there all stem back to one visual prototype: a Byzantine image in the city’s cathedral (Fig. 1). This early treatment of the Veronica was given to the cathedral in 1437 by Martin the Humane, King of Aragon and Valencia, who promoted religious veneration of the Veronica of the Virgin as part of the celebration of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. 17th century Flemish old Master painting The present painting is truly a little jewel with its vibrant colours and skilful brushwork. It depicts the Baptism of Christ, a depiction of a tale filled with hope and positivity, it is a very fine example of Malo's talent. We would like to thank Anna Orlando for her assistance in cataloguing this painting. A copy of her entry on this painting will be given to the buyer. She writes about the present painting: The painting illustrated here, unpublished, refers to Vincenzo (Vincent) Malò, a Flemish artist active in Italy and in particular in Genoa in the first half of the seventeenth century, by now well known. The critics who started studying him in the sixties of the last century recognized the initial confusion of our painter with Vincenzo Alemanno (1595-1675); many documents subsequently traced both in the Genoese and Roman archives have partially specified his biographical details, but certainly his identity. Son of a certain Nicola, Vincent trained in Antwerp with David Teniers the Elder and then with Rubens, he was intermittently enrolled in the painters' guild, between 1623 and 1634. It is unlikely that he first arrived in Genoa in 1625 , when the city was at war against the Savoys, and it is entirely probable that his stay in Italy fell between 1634 and the year of his death, documented in Rome in 1644. It were about ten fertile years, also thanks to the lessons from Rubens who had taught him to paint speedily...

This well-documented drawing was given to Boucher by the Marquis de Chennevières, one of the most important collectors of drawings at the end of the 19th century. While the landscape is reminiscent of Boucher's other landscape drawings, our drawing was probably modified at a later stage by the addition of the two figures in the right foreground and by the slight enhancement of the horizon line behind them. 1. Passpartout included 29 x 39 cm The artwork is in good condition with some foxing. Together Giovanni Lanfranco with Sisto Badalocchio (q.v.), he was a pupil in Parma of Agostino Carracci (1557-1602). Again with Badalocchio, he traveled to Rome in 1602, following Agostino's death, to work under Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), where the two assisted him with, among other projects, the completion of the decoration of the Galleria Farnese. Lanfranco's return to Rome in 1612, he was for long the close rival of Domenichino (q.v.) for some of the most prestigious commissions of the day. Lanfranco's reputation was secured by his 'proto-Baroque', illusionistic fresco in the style of Correggio in the dome of S.Andrea della Valle, painted in 1625-7. In 1634 Lanfranco transferred to Naples, where he painted fresco decorations in the Gesu Nuovo (1634-5); the Certosa di S. Martino (1637-8/9; see 1967,0211.2); SS Apostles (1638-46; see 1895,0915.728); and the Cappella del Tesoro in the cathedral of S. Gennaro.
