Crystal Cove in Newport, California is a popular destination for plein air artists, known for its rustic setting along the 12-mile coast. The beach is surrounded by lush greenery and boasts crystal-clear water, making it the perfect setting for a painting. I was especially drawn to Crystal Cove for its unique combination of scenic beauty and recreational activities. Snorkelers and scuba divers can often be seen exploring the waters, and the beach is a popular spot for walkers and sunbathers. I enjoyed walking the beach, taking in the sights and sounds of this special place. The sound of the waves, combined with the salty ocean air, was invigorating and helped me focus on my work. One of the highlights of painting Crystal Cove was capturing the charming, old-world atmosphere of the beach cottages that line the shore. These cottages, with their weathered wood and colorful shutters, add character and history to the landscape and make for an interesting subject to paint. ABOUT
In this exhibition, Mindaugas Gabrenas invites us to reflect on the poetics of place through his lyrical and surrealist imagery. His hand-printed silver gelatin prints reveal abandoned regions, wild coasts and strange territories from Lithuania to Scotland to America. As a scientific innovator, he uses unique techniques and unconventional materials in order to create his whimsical, dream photos.
In “Spinning The Wheel”, stars trace the sky in a curved motion and meet the water below creating a sense of the infinite. As Gabrenas explores and captures landscapes through very long exposures, he actually meditates and reflects on the world around him encouraging his viewers to imagine themselves within the landscapes and dream with him.
In another image “Dream About an Empty House”, that was taken in Lithuania, we see a young girl from behind in a red polka dotted dress as she faces an abandoned home. Using his handmade camera he constructed by merging two cameras—a Kiev 88 and a Kodak Duaflex II. The viewfinder of the Duaflex serves as an additional filter on the lens of the Kiev 88, which is fixed to its body with several macro rings. Before shooting the film, he wraps it in black rye bread and waits several days for the mold to grow onto the film. The combination of these two techniques creates a sense of motion around the central figure.
“Alternatives”, our invitational image, pulls us into Gabrenas’ world. The focused close-up and abstracted view of train tracks distorts a familiar shape into a strange and unusual form. The tracks lead you in the distance, a blurry city of New York. The ironic lack of human life in New York City conveys a mystifying sense of place.

ABOUT
The idyllic and playful world of The Peconic Bay in Southampton, NY dances to life in Luciana Pampalone’s first solo exhibition. Each location was scouted by Pampalone and transformed into a vintage 1930s setting by the use of her models and props. A Graphlex camera, aviator goggles, parasols, retro bathing suits and games of croquet, (just to name a few) subtly tamper with the past, breathing life back into the 1930s. Moment by moment, Pampalone encapsulates the ephemeral quality of life, bending and blending human subjects within the natural landscape.
Never has a world of black and white looked so colorful. In the gallery installation, a red accent wall will emphasize the spirit and energy evoked by Pampalone’s black and white photographs. The strong compositions and delicate imagery of each photograph come together to transport us into a world of amusement and joy.
“Smile”, the invitational image, let us in on the surreptitious but not-so-secret powers of Pampalone as director. The woman wielding the artist’s personal ‘30s Graphlex camera confronts the male model, embodying strength, poise and an engaging sense of playfulness. Her commanding presence draws him in until he is physically leaning towards her and becomes her subject. Strong and confident, the heroine radiates the eternal spirit of adventure.
