1970s Vintage 'De Velasco Boutique, Tanger’ Black Silk Pink Embroidered Caftan

This luxurious caftan was made in Morocco during the1970s, but is origins date back thousands of years and span the globe. The history of the caftan is a bit uncertain. It is believed to have originated from Turkish culture but appears in many others. In Morocco, it was first worn by men but was eventually adopted by women, as well. The loose tunics are historically adorned with ornate trims, like the pink passementerie on this black silk caftan. The narrow silken braid is twisted into the intricate flowing design that borders every edge of this caftan and down its front. The traditional garment was adopted by several countries in Europe and then eventually made its way to the United States - where it was especially popular during the 1970s. The caftan served as inspiration for some of the eras most iconic designers, like the innovative Rudi Gernreich. His avant-garde, unisex caftans debuted at the 1970 World Fair Expo in Osaka, Japan. Garments like the caftan and its intricate embellishments were also reimagined by Yves Saint Laurent in his multicultural designs. As seen in this Moroccan version, the caftan manages to seamlessly integrate stunning details like embroidery into a garment that is still very comfortable to wear. The caftan’s simple but chic silhouette can be worn while lounging at home or dressed up with dramatic accessories for a night on the town. With such versatility, it’s easy to see why the caftan’s appeal has endured for so long.

Philadelphia based artist and Industrial designer Frederic Weinberg produced and sold a wide variety of striking decorative and functional pieces items under a company bearing his name.
More then 50 years after ceasing production, Weinberg’s designs remain as fresh and vital as ever. His extremely stylized figures and masterfully playful use of line and negative space to convey form are an absolute delight.
Very little else is known about the man and his company. The majority of pieces attributed to him lack his signature / label. His table lamps and horse figures are thought to be earlier productions, circa 1946-1950, and marked examples are extremely rare and highly coveted.

Influenced by the work of Jakob Tuggener and Bill Brandt, as well as Walker Evans, Frank, a native of Switzerland, Frank was fascinated by documentary photography and the notion and image of "America." Frank secured a Guggenheim fellowship in 1955 to do something new and unconstrained by commercial diktats. "The Americans" was first published in 1958 in France, before its first run in the US in 1959. The photographs were shocking and notable for their distanced view of both high and low strata of American society, creating a complicated portrait of a period that was, then and now, considered to be a skeptical portrait of post-WWII American values but also deeply empathetic and profoundly evocative of ubiquitous loneliness.
Frank found a tension in the gloss of American culture and wealth over race and class differences, which gave his photographs a clear contrast to those of most contemporary American photojournalists, as did his use of unusual focus, low lighting and cropping that deviated from accepted photographic techniques.
Shortly before the book was published in France, Frank returned to the US (1957) and met Jack Kerouac on the sidewalk outside a party. They started chatting. Frank showed him some of his photographs. Kerouac immediately told Frank "Sure, I can write something about these pictures." Kerouac would write the introduction to the American edition of the book, published two years later.
