A fine and impressive set of six antique George V English sterling silver menu / card holders - boxed; an addition to our diverse dining silverware collection. These fine antique George V sterling silver menu card holders have circular shaped bases. Each piece is surmounted with an impressive wishbone* shaped design with a paralleling shaped support. The subtly convex bases are encircled with an elevated scalloped border. The weighted bases of these impressive menu holders are fitted with green baize to the underside. This impressive set of antique silver menu card holders is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with two hinged catches. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Robert Stewart (Jewellers) Ltd, 75 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow'. A wishbone, otherwise known as the furcular, is a forked bone found in birds and some dinosaurs. The main function of the bone is to provide strength between the neck and breast, to protect the creature during battle. The Ancient Romans perceived this bone as a symbol of luck which allowed the progression of breaking a dried chicken wishbone apart whilst making a wish; this procedure determined the person with the bigger half would receive their wish or have good fortune. Georg Jensen by J. Rohde sterling silver charger/ dinner plate in celebrated Acorn pattern number 642A. It measures 11'' in diameter by 3/4'', weighs 22.2 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown. Johan Rohde hailed from a wealthy family and studied medicine prior to enrolling in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1882. A forward-thinking, anti-establishment artist, he left after less than a year, disillusioned by their refusal to accept modern trends. Rohde possessed a tireless creative mind and, in addition to painting and drawing, was also a lithographer, graphic artist, bookbinder, and designer. He embraced the Scandinavian design movement which, similar to the Arts & Crafts movement in America, encouraged the application of artistic sensibility to everyday objects. Rohde designed furniture and silverware for his own home, which led him to commission Georg Jensen to execute one of his hollowware designs.
