Monumental Majolica Houdan Hen & Chick Vase Choisy Le Roi by Paul Comolera
By Paul Comolera
Located in Austin, TX
Spectacular Majolica mottled Houdan hen with his chick vase signed Paul Comolera for the manufacture of Choisy le roi, circa 1875. The houdan hen feed his chick with a worm, a branch with leaves is on the base with blackberries, on the back of the hen a large vase with leaves. An incredible example of the Naturalism of the 19th century. This piece is very unusual by the color. The poule de Houdan is an old French breed of domestic chicken named by her origin the commune of Houdan near Paris, this hens are all usually mottled black and white like this one. It's very possible it's an early example of the production or a special order because all the others hens know on the market are white. At the end of 19th century, Choisy le roi was one of the most important ceramics...
