Orpheus is an artwork realized by Gustave Bourgogne in the 1940s.  Pencil and watercolor, ink on paper.  Good conditions. Gustave Bourgogne (1888-1968), a french painter born in 1888 in Veigné in Indre et Loire and died in Paris in 1968. He excelled in landscapes, still lifes and portraits and specialized in the abstract interpretation of great musical compositions. In 1928, hearing the great carillon of the cathedral of Mechelen, he had the revelation of the correspondence of sounds and colors and began to reproduce in his paintings the impressions felt while listening to music, considering that painting is like music, the result of the same deep rhythm. In the company of Henri Valensi, Charles Blanc-Gatti and Vito Stracquadaini, Gustave Bourgogne published the Musicalism Manifesto in 1932 and created with them the Association of Musical Artists. EUGENE ABESHAUS Leningrad, Russia, (1939-2008) Hand-Colored, with watercolor painting, Etching hand signed in pencil in English and Hebrew Numbered 47/110 Framed 21.5 x 16. image 13.5 x 9 Eugene Abeshaus (also spelled Evgeny Abezgauz, Евгений Абезгауз in Russian; 1939–2008) was a Jewish artist who worked in Russia (then USSR) and Israel. Born in Leningrad to a typical intelligentsia family, Abeshaus was educated as an electrical engineer but soon abandoned this career and enrolled in the Mukhina School for Applied Art. By the time of his graduation from the famous “Mukha” (Fly in Russian), he had already developed a critical stance towards the official Soviet art dominated by the Communist ideology and began exhibiting at semi-underground exhibitions. This was culminated by his taking part in a famous 1975 exhibition at the Nevsky Palace of Culture. Abeshaus was fired from his job and censured by the official press – which however admitted his "artistic taste, a good sense of color and form". Soon afterwards, Abeshaus set up, together with several Jewish artists, the Alef Group and became its leader. The group’s first exhibition in November 1975 was held at Abeshauses’ small apartment. According to the Alef Manifesto written by Alek Rapoport, “We are trying to conquer the influence of small-town Jewish art and find sources for our work in deeper, wiser, and more spiritual European culture, and from it build a bridge to today and tomorrow". "Concert of the Night" is part of the 4-piece "Concert of the Hours of the Day Lithograph Suite. In this lithograph, Alvar shows a figure playing Chopin’s Nocturne No.1 at the piano. Next to the pianist there appears a figure eluding to George Sand who is holding laurel leaves symbolizing the inspiration of the artist whose portrait (extracted from a portrait of Chopin by the French painter Delacroix) appears in the lithograph. Being a nocturne, the chromatic range in the work consists predominately of blue tones, dominated by the brilliance of the lunar light in an atmosphere of seclusion and intimacy. This lithograph is hand-embellished with a watercolor over a lithograph drawing at the bottom of the main image. This piece was created, signed, and numbered by the artist. More about Alvar: Alvar Suñol Munoz-Ramos, commonly known as Alvar, was born in 1935 in Montgat, Spain, a Catalan fishing village on the Mediterranean coast near Barcelona. By the age of 17, he was accepted into the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Jorge in Barcelona. In 1960, he moved to Paris and exhibited with other major Spanish artists including Picasso, Miró, and Dalí. Today, Alvar is recognized on an international platform for his exploration of the psychological and historical complexities of art-making and creation in relation to one’s environment and experiences. The examination of both interiors and exterior spaces place a significant role in all of Alvar’s works. Alvar strengthens his artistic vision through the use of various mediums including oil paintings, lithographs, watercolors, drawings, bronzes, and ceramic bas relief sculptures.
