Antique 19th Century Moroccan Kaftan, Fez
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Antique 19th century Moroccan caftan in brocade fabric. One of a kind Moroccan Middle Eastern kaftan traditional robe. The type of garment referred to as kaftan was known in Persia and the Ottoman Empire before arriving in Morocco, probably in the 16th century. Kaftans are typically worn with fabric belts, and those made of elegant materials such as silk brocade or velvet were reserved for special occasions. The silk in this kaftan can be identified as an import from Lyons, France, and indicates this garment was made for an elite and cosmopolitan member of urban Moroccan society. This Moroccan kaftan features a traditional neckline, with side slits and long sleeves. Fully lined. The neck is very small it indicate that it was probably made for a young person. In Morocco, fashion preserves its traditional style inherited from great civilizations that found their way to Northwest Africa, such as the Ottomans and the Moors. Moroccan fashion has been recognized for its style and has garnered a reputation, winning awards in international fashion shows throughout Europe. Marrakech Bohemian, Yves Saint Laurent style. Made in Morocco, Fez. Metal wrapped thread; brocaded. circa 19th century Measurements flat: Bust 23”. Waist 33”. Across shoulders 19”. Sleeve length 22”. Centre back length 57”.
