Robert Garret Thew
Robert Garret Thew was born in 1892 in Sharon, Connecticut and studied fine arts at Syracuse University. He also studied painting under George Bellows at the Art Students League of New York. After serving in the US Army from 1918–19, he was employed at the J. Walter Thompson Agency where he introduced the use of color in magazine advertising. He married Elsie Greene in 1923. Thew later moved to Westport, Connecticut, where he formed the Artistic Bronze Foundry to produce sculptures of his creation. In the five years before the market crash of 29, he produced small sculptures of lamps, doorstops, trivets, bookends, etc. Thew died in 1964 in Westport.
