Contemporary, Geometric, Ceramic, Vessel, Sculpture, Stoneware, Glaze, Design
By Judith Ernst
Located in St. Louis, MO
Originally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside of the vessel, a “Jacob’s Ladder” that leads not just up but in. Using sculptural techniques, I cut through the wall of the pot to get more depth and dynamic movement. I continue to push the limits of my medium, taking apart thrown vessels and reconfiguring them in new ways. Outcroppings 02, Repeating Geometric Ceramic Vessel...

"Echo 1", Pair of Impressionist Style Oil Painting on Canvas, Waterscape Diptych
By Jill Hackney
Located in St. Louis, MO
"A native of New Orleans, Jill Hackney studied painting at The Cleveland Institute of Art and Louisiana State University, where she earned her BFA. She is a founding member and twice president of Studio 801, an artists’ cooperative in Baton Rouge. She was also recently selected as a Fellow of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation for her work as President of the NUNU Arts and Culture Collective. Best known for her still life and landscape work, her focus is to show light’s impact on her subjects through layers of vertical and linear strokes. Using the natural texture of the wood on which she paints, each painting is approached with a sense of nostalgia. The end effect is a union of the senses, which awakens feelings of joy, serenity, and peace. Jill currently functions as the Director of International Communications for NUNU Arts and Culture Collective." "Echo 1", Pair of Impressionist...

"From the Inside", Contemporary, Mixed Media, Abstract, Painting, Wood Panel
By Ronald Johnson
Located in St. Louis, MO
Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1968, Ronald Johnson received an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003. Since then, Johnson has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, as well as being a resident at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming in 2004 and at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France in 2002. Johnson uses strategically placed canvas strips to act as dam walls to corral the poured paint and polyurethane mix. Each layer must be sanded vigorously to ensure as much precision as possible. The sanding process gives the surface a unique sheen, while simultaneously transparent and opaque, reminiscent of encaustic. Through Johnson’s process, the layers become diffused and viscously permeable, with crisp edges and a traceable lost-and-found history. Contemporary Design, Abstract Mixed Media Painting on Wood Panel, Acrylic Paint "From the Inside...

Contemporary Wood Fired Porcelain Jar Form, Design, Sculpture, Glaze, Ceramic
By Perry Haas
Located in St. Louis, MO
Perry Haas is a ceramic artist making functional pottery and focusing on wood-firing techniques. Drawing from a love for the wood-fired ceramic surface, Perry looks to anticipate the manner in which ash in the kiln will collect in different arrays across the convex and concave surfaces of his gestural clay forms. “I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms. These functional pots are developed as a place for this surface to exist and to be enjoyed as a part of our daily life.”—Haas Contemporary Large Ceramic Jar...

"Whispers", Contemporary, Abstract, Oil, Painting, Canvas, Texture, Pattern
By Brian Smith
Located in St. Louis, MO
“The act of painting is a vital experience. I see my art as a record of the subconscious and the painting process. The result is an interaction of imagined forms and spaces. Each work is intuitively developed through a personal method and logic. The reactions I have to the natural world and to the art that inspires me inform their meaning. Unique arrangements of colors, marks and textures are fundamental characteristics of my art. When integrated they convey a dazzling optical effect and a spirited emotional quality. The sensuous characteristics of paint make these aspects arresting, and the images themselves are distinctly abstract.” Selected Collections Wells Fargo Advisors, St. Louis, MO Macy’s Department Stores: St. Louis, MO; Houston, TX; Columbia, MO; Independence, MO; Franklin, TN Emerson Electric, St. Louis, MO Washington University...

"Protected" Photograph Printed on Silk with Hand Stitched Embellishments, Framed
By Luanne Rimel
Located in St. Louis, MO
Luanne Rimel is an artist, curator, instructor, and currently the Director of Education Programs at Craft Alliance Art Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Her work is layered with historical dialogue and tactile intrigue through both technique and concept. Rimel prints her original photography on repurposed flour-sack cloths using a wide-format inkjet printer. Detailed sections of the image are created and layered, collaged and hand stitched onto the cloth, referencing earlier domestic practices of mending and repair, reuse and repurposing. The delicate, repetitive hand quilting across the surface creates shadows and textures and alludes to the marking of time. Her photographic imagery and textile work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including Japan, China and Korea, and is in many private and corporate collections. Her work is traveling in Quilt National 2013 and was in QN 2011. She has exhibited in the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Smithsonian Craft Shows. Her work will also be included in the new book, Art Quilts of the Midwest, published by the University of Iowa Press. Other exhibitions include a solo exhibit at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis, MO, Art Quilt Elements, Wayne, PA, and the Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago IL. "The Most Beautiful Man", Contemporary Oil Painting on Copper, Portrait
By Jed Jackson
Located in St. Louis, MO
Jed Jackson was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Throughout his education, he studied under artists such as Janet Fish, Fairfield Porter, and Leland Bell, and reaps influence from the “gritty realism” of artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jacques Louis David, and early Edgar Degas, and the work of his contemporaries including John Currin and David Salle. Jackson is currently a Professor of Painting at University of Memphis in Tennessee and is the author of the book “Art: A Comparative Study.” Jackson’s paintings are modern mythological allegories, rich with subtle innuendos, political dissent, and emotional ambiguity. Gleaning inspiration from fashion magazines, movies, the literary world, and a plethora of other twentieth century cultural sources, Jackson incorporates these images and ideas with a keen sense of color to create paintings that are simultaneously rich in content and aesthetically dynamic. Contemporary Installation Sculpture, Woven and Crocheted Videotape with Cotton
By John Garrett
Located in St. Louis, MO
John Garrett was raised in southern New Mexico by parents who were both educators. They instilled in him an appreciation for the handmade with their collections of Native American arts and crafts. He moved to Claremont, California, to attend college at Claremont Men’s College (now Claremont McKenna College.) Following his desire to make things by hand, he enrolled in a weaving class taught by Marion Stewart at Scripps College in 1970. His intrigue with the tools, systems and materials involved in weaving and other textile constructions led him to take other courses with Neda Al-Hilali a year later, also at Scripps. He did graduate work at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied with Bernard Kester and Vasa. Garrett has exhibited throughout the United States for over thirty years in hundreds of exhibitions, as well as in Europe, Africa and Asia. Garrett has worked simultaneously with two and three-dimensional formats to create his textile forms with a variety of materials. Visually unpredictable, his work may be woven, wrapped, plaited, riveted, painted, rusted, twined, nailed, stitched or tied. With an expansive repertoire of materials, each work of art is meticulously crafted, while achieving an energetic complexity; he moves gracefully from constructing wall pieces to baskets, breathing new life into discarded objects. Currently a full time studio artist, he teaches workshops on creativity and experimental basketry at schools nationwide. He was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts fellowships in 1983 and 1995 as well as elected a Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2010. Contemporary Abstract Acrylic Painting on Canvas, Framed
The sensuous characteristics of paint make these aspects arresting, and the images themselves are distinctly abstract.” - Artist Statement Selected Collections Wells Fargo Advisors...

Contemporary Porcelain Sculpture with Intricate Ceramic Decals, Colorful Pattern
By Jesse Small
Located in St. Louis, MO
Small’s work includes porcelain figurines and lace-like steel chandeliers inspired by branches and twigs he has documented during his travels. While in China, Small’s porcelain forms developed as visual communicators, in a culture where he didn’t speak the language. Like tattoos, Small’s glaze imagery of colorful Chinese trucks, buses, traditional motifs, nature and ornament float on the skin of his two primary porcelain forms, Talk Bubbles and Ghosts. Small’s steel chandeliers contain echoes of the opulent past of the 17th & 18th century, but have been set free of function and the restraint of tradition. Constructed of filigreed steel cut by computer controlled machines, the chandeliers are composed of “fins” of metal lace, hinged around a central axis. Small’s chandeliers are suspended sculptures that question the origins of ornamental habits. Major stylistic revolutions such as Bauhaus or Pop demolish definitions and use of ornament, but many old habits slip through the cracks.
