Bernard Segal (1907 - 1986) Lived Active: New York / Pennsylvania Known For: figure, abstract painting, collage, and illustration - cartoons. Bernard Segal was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Cincinnati University and the Cincinnati Art Academy. In the 1920's and 1930's, he lived in New York City and attended The Art Students League where he was creative with a number of artistic styles of the period. During World War II, he worked as a cartoonist for a government issue newspaper paper called 10-SHUN that was published in Greensboro, North Carolina. Bernard worked under the penname Seeg, and was the author of the comic strip Hank and Honey, that appeared in the New York Herald Tribunefrom the 1940s through the 1950s. This cartoon was syndicated and published in Quebec under the title Louise et Louis. The strip was later retitled to Ellsworth. Segal also illustrated a number of books that were published by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and Bible stories. In the 1950's Segal moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and became a member of the New Hope Modernists. He worked with esteemed artists such as George Nakashima, Charles Evans, Louis Stone, and Charles Ramsey. His work included projected DVD installations, Type C prints, and collaborative film projects. Education and career Blake graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a B.F.A. in 1993 and the California Institute of the Arts with an M.F.A. in 1995.[1] Still from Blake's Winchester Redux, a five-minute digital video with sound, continuous loop (2004) His work was selected for the Whitney Biennial in 2000, 2002[2] and 2004.[3] His "Winchester" series, inspired by the story of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House, was shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2005.[4] He also was selected to participate in the Renaissance Society group exhibition, "All the Pretty Corpses", in 2005.[5] Blake also created the painted abstract interlude sequences for Paul Thomas Anderson's fourth film Punch-Drunk Love, and contributed images and video for Beck's album Sea Change. Often called a romantic expressionist and American intimist, self-taught Pennsylvania artist Sterling Strauser (1907-1995) completed his first oil painting in 1922- inspired by frequent visits to the collection of American folk art at the Everhardt Museum in Scranton. Throughout the following seven decades of his career, Strauser’s artistic pursuit was based on his own intuition and determination to paint what he saw, rather than adhering to the conventional pictorial structures prescribed by prevailing styles at the time. Strauser rejected pretension, believing instead that art should work from life as it was lived. His oeuvre therefore serves as an extremely personal record of his observations and experiences from his lifetime painting in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Beginning early in his career, Strauser took his inspiration from American regionalists and traditional realists in the Ashcan style, as well as European movements such as Fauvism and Cubism, yet he eventually developed his own fluid realism based on subject matter beloved and familiar to him- family and friends, local landscapes and floral still lifes. Known for his distorted pictorial space, exaggerated with vivid color, heavy impasto and an intensity of emotion, Strauser was adept at altering and rearranging the details and aspects of any given form to create a new kind of beauty.
