Born in Chicago, (parents of both Mexican and Puerto Rican Latino heritage) Juarez received his B.F.A. at the San Francisco Art Institute (1977) and pursued graduate studies in Television and Film at the University of California, Los Angeles. Juarez frequently employs painterly floral motifs, which are inspired by the traditions of Hispanic, Latin American and non-Western painting. Roberto Juarez has been a significant presence in the art worlds of New York, Miami, Colorado, and beyond since the early 1980s. In 1978, Juarez completed his graduate thesis for UCLA in Paris and decided not to return to L.A. Juarez relocated to New York City, where in 1981, Ellen Stewart offered Juarez a former garage owned by La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club as an artist studio. The space, which had no water or electricity, was offered to Juarez rent-free, provided that he clean and maintain it. He was active in the Neo Expressionist era of the the late 1980's along with Julian Schnabel and David Salle. Throughout the 80s and 90s Juarez painted the branching forms of trees and flowers. While living in Miami in the 90s, Juarez began to incorporate peat moss, rice paper, and other natural materials in his canvases. Since 2000, and his move from Miami back to New York, Juarez's imagery turned more abstract, typically featuring geometric forms and systems. In a review from this period, art critic Grace Glueck noted that his works feature “a contrast between the softness of the grounds – blends of transparent and opaque materials in muted colors – and their strong geometric-organic motifs." In his use of elements of nature to portray an idyllic unity, Juarez looks back to such early-20th-century painters as Franz Marc and Henri Matisse. He has done prints with Shark’s Ink Studios in Lyons and Anderson Ranch Arts Center as well as Tamarind Institute. Roberto Juarez is a visual artist who has been active in the areas of painting, printmaking, drawing, and large-scale public commissions throughout his career. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Mexico, and is included in major museum collections such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, El Museo del Barrio, the Denver Art Museum, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Newark Museum, and the Speed Art Museum. He has completed public art projects and murals for the Miami International Airport, Grand Central Terminal, the Miami-Dade County Courthouse, Whitman College, and the University of Michigan College of Engineering. Her works have been featured in exhibitions across North America and at the Liberty show at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Elias graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, lives and works in Miami, Florida and in New York City. As an artist and art historian, Elias works with the layers of life and art history, seeking in it a connection between art aesthetics and social consciousness. She has exhibited with diverse artists, Larry Rivers, Bob Stanley, Ford Crull, Sol LeWitt, Mark Tobey, Walter Darby Bannard, Clyde Butcher. Her work spans the disciplines of painting, digital mixed media, sculpture, installation and performance. Her inspiration to be an artist began with the work that Matisse created (La Cirque) in the library of the Art Institute of Chicago. (144.8 x 83.8 x 58.4cm) Provenance: Malcolm Forbes collection The artist Loren Munk (born 1951) is primarily known for his YouTube nickname James Kalm as an uploader of videos about New York exhibitions, amongst others. He presents himself as a maker of contemporary paintings for several decades and of cubist paintings of urban imagery. Munk has received accolades for his drawings and mosaics. He differs from traditional mosaic artists by the manner in which he incorporates glass into his decorative paintings. His unique and innovative use of materials such as mirror, gold-leaf and glass mosaic affirmed him as a founding force of Kitsch Art and a leading member of New York Neo-Expressionism. Munk's work debuted in SoHo in 1981 with a double show at J. Fields Gallery and Gabrielle Bryers. Since then, he has overseen an international career. In addition to exhibiting in Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, Munk has received national and overseas, public and private commissions. He is well represented in important collections throughout Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. Most recently, Munk has been producing a series of paintings which tackle the subject of art itself through a historical and diagrammatic lens. Nicholas Krushenick (May 31, 1929 – February 5, 1999) was an American abstract painter whose artistic style straddled the line between Op Art, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Color Field. He was active in the New York art scene in the 1960s and 1970s, before he withdrew and focused his time as a professor at the University of Maryland for almost thirty years until his death in 1999. Initially experimenting with a more Abstract Expressionist inspired style and cut paper collage, Krushenick is more well known for his paintings which use bold Liquitex colors and juxtaposing black lines, which fall under the category of pop abstraction. In fact, he is a singular figure within that style. Born in New York City in 1929, Krushenick dropped out of high school, served in World War II, worked on constructing the Major Deegan Expressway, and then returned to art school, with the help of the GI Bill. He attended the Art Students League of New York (1948–1950) and the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Art (1950–1951). In the early 1950s Krushenick supported himself and his family by designing window displays for department stores and working for the Whitney and Metropolitan museums and the Museum of Modern Art. Calman Shemi, sculptor and painter, was born in Argentina in 1939. A graduate of the School of Sculpture and Ceramics in Mendoza, he studied under the Italian-Argentinean sculptor Libero Badii whom he credits with putting him on the right path. “He taught me principals, not only related to sculpture, but human and philosophic principals. Shemi also carefully studied the work of such masters as Picasso, Caravaggio, Frank Stella and Matisse. “From each one of these great artists I learned something from observing them,” he says. In 1961, at the age of 20, Shemi immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Carmia of which he was a member for twenty years. There he worked in agriculture and also as a sculptor working with wood and clay. Several of his large-scale fiberglass and polyester projects are situated in public buildings. He was a student of German-Israeli sculptor Rudi Lehmann, a pioneer of the artistic movement known as “Canaanism.” Canaanite art was an effort to create a direct relationship with the land, bypassing historic Jewish connotations—hence the land’s primordial name is used. Canaanite works, with an emphasis on the inter-action of simple shapes, bear a deliberate resemblance to the sculpture and ritual art of early civilizations of the Middle East prior to Judaism, always with an eye to the fusion of man and the land itself. Though sculpture dominated his early years as an artist, in the mid ’70s Shemi developed the idea of the “soft painting” medium. Felipe Castaneda (Mexican, b.1933) was born in 1933 in La Palma in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. His artistic career began at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City where he became an assistant to the renowned sculptor Francisco Zúñiga (French, 1867–1947), Zuniga helped the artist realize his aptitude for sculpting and carving. Castañeda finished his studies in 1963, and by 1970, he was showing his work in exhibitions. Castañeda experimented with many media in order to master molding clay for his sculptures, preferring to work in marble, onyx, and bronze. The heavy influence of pre-Columbian artifacts is evident in his traditional approach to representing the human form. His stylized depictions of the female body are just one example of his expressive use of the media he works with. Eugenio Carmi is an Italian painter born in 1920 in Genoa. He studied in Turin in Felice Casorati’s studio. His experience as a graphic designer in the ‘50s, is decisive for his pictorial research, based on a rigorous geometrical structure and on a fine analysis of the perception of colors. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1966. In 1967 he showed some electronic works in the Superlund exhibition organized by Pierre Restany in Lund, Sweden. In 1968, he introduced the “Carm-o-matic”, during the Cybernetic Serendipity show at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. In 1973, he produced an entirely abstract 25-minute show for RAI’s Experimental Programs Service. The same year, he taught visual art seminars at the Rhode Island Institute of Design in the United States. In the ‘70s, he gave courses at the Accademia of Macerata and at the Accademia of Ravenna (Italy). He produced illustrations for three of Umberto Eco’s stories, published in Italy by Bompiani and in many other countries. The French Ministry of Education has selected them for libraries and schools in France. The most important retrospective of his work was organized by the Milan town hall in 1990, followed by a prestigious exhibition in Budapest, in the halls of the Royal Palace, in 1992. In 1991 he exhibited at the San Francisco Italian American Museum. In 1996 the “Carmi” book is published by Umberto Eco and Duncan Macmillan and presented at the Milan Triennial: a synthesis of his life. From 1957 to 1965 he will play the role of artistic director of Cornigliano's corporate magazine. During this time iron and steel are materials that Carmi meets every day and become a strong creative stimulus for him. In his first solo exhibition - presented by Gillo Dorfles in 1958 at the Galleria Numero di Firenze - the protagonists are the enamels on steel and since 1960 he made various iron and steel works welded and lithographed milk. Iron and steel is the work that in 1962 presented at Spoleto Sculpture exhibition in the city , organized by Giovanni Carandente under the V Festival of the Two Worlds . In this period, he is involved not only in the cultural politics of the Istallier ( Victor Vasarely , Umberto Eco , Max Bill , Konrad Wachsmann , Furio Colombo , Ugo Mulas , Kurt Blum , Emanuele Luzzati , Flavio Costantini ) , But also in the cultural activity of the Warehouse Gallery , which Carmi founded in Boccadasse in 1963. The Warehouse Gallery with multiples intends to propose a serial art accessible to a wider audience and is placed in international discussions on 'Multiplied Art, representing one of the most important examples. The friendship and mutual esteem that binds him to Umberto Eco has two very important fruits at this time: Children's Fables and Stripsody . In 1966 for the publishing house Bompiani came three Eco fables illustrated by Carmi and then re-introduced in 1988 with new Carmi illustrations and a fable more. Stripsody is a musical project on cartoon sound, designed and then interpreted by the genius singer Cathy Berberian, with Eco texts and illustrations by Carmi. Eugenio Carmi, who is always fascinated by the new technological possibilities in the 1960s and 1970s, is the author of experimental cinematic and audiovisual artwork and also realizes those who will call electrical imagery signals that will also be at the center of a provocative installation on the streets of the city of Caorle . It is at this stage that in 1966 he was at the XXXIII edition of the Venice Biennale with the electronic work SPCE (electronically controlled polycyclic structure), which is also the invitation of Pierre Restany to participate with electronic works at the SuperLund exhibition in Sweden. In 1971, he moved to Milan with his family, where he established his study. This painted wood assemblage sculpture by Italo Scanga, epitomizes the characteristics of his oeuvre. Polychrome head portrait bust. This was signed on a brass or bronze plaque but that has gone missing. It is unsigned. I believe there might be a studio stamp on the bottom. Italo Scanga (June 6, 1932 - July 7, 2001), an Italian-born American artist, was known for his sculptures, prints and, paintings, mostly created from found objects. In his youth in Calabria, Italy he worked as a cabinetmaker's apprentice and studies sculpture with a man who carved statues of saints. Italo Scanga was an innovative neo Dada, neo-Expressionist, and neo-Cubist multimedia artist who made assemblage, collage, sculptures of ordinary objects and created prints, glass, and ceramic works. Modern Italian abstract geometric folk art. Scanga's materials included natural objects like branches and seashells, as well as kitsch figurines, castoff musical instruments and decorative trinkets salvaged from flea markets and thrift shops. He combined these ingredients into free-standing assemblages, which he then painted. Although visually ebullient, the results sometimes referred to gruesome episodes from Greek mythology or the lives and deaths of martyred saints. He considered his artistic influences to be sweepingly pan-cultural, from African sculpture to Giorgio de Chirico. He often collaborated with the sculptor Dale Chihuly, who was a close friend. Constructed of wood and glass, found objects or fabric, his ensembles reflect a trio of activities—working, eating, and praying. These activities dominate the lives of those who live close to the land, but they are also activities that are idealized by many who contemplate, romantically, a simpler, bucolic life. Italo graduated from Michigan State University where he befriended fellow artists Richard Merkin and David Pease. He studied under Lindsey Decker who introduces him to welding and sculpture after his initial interest in photography. Also studies with Charles Pollock, the brother of Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock. His first teaching job was at University of Wisconsin (through 1964). where he met Harvey Littleton, a fellow instructor. He later moves to Providence, Rhode Island,I to teach at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Is colleagues with artists Richard Merkin and Hardu Keck. Starts a correspondence with HC Westermann. Spends summers teaching at Brown University; colleague of Hugh Townley. Moves to State College, PA, and teaches at Pennsylvania State University for one year. Clough dropped out and on January 5, 1971 decided that he would devote his life to art. He traded his sculptor's assistant services for studio space with artist Larry W. Griffis Jr., at the Ashford Hollow Foundation's 30 Essex Street former ice-house facility. From 1971-1972 he attended the Ontario College of Art and was introduced to the artists and galleries of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. By 1973 many of the University at Buffalo's and Buffalo State's art professors had rented studios at 30 Essex Street. One of these, Joseph Panone, brought his student, Robert Longo and introduced him to Clough, which resulted in the program of exhibitions and artists' visits which became Hallwalls in 1974. When he was twelve, Ted and his family moved to the United States and settled in Philadelphia. In 1962, Ted moved to New York City, where he began a successful career in the banking and computer industries. While his job satisfied many of his interests, he felt the need to get involved in something creative. Combined with his interest in art and the visual beauty he discovered on his early visits to the eastern tip of Long Island, Ted began painting in the early 1970’s. Sheila Elias (born in Chicago, Illinois) is an American artist. Her work is Neo Expressionist, Feminist Pop Art. Her works have been featured in exhibitions across North America and at the Liberty show at the Louvre Museum in Paris. Elias graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, lives and works in Miami, Florida and in New York City. As an artist and art historian, Elias works with the layers of life and art history, seeking in it a connection between art aesthetics and social consciousness. She has exhibited with diverse artists, Larry Rivers, Bob Stanley, Ford Crull, Sol LeWitt, Mark Tobey, Walter Darby Bannard, Clyde Butcher. Her work spans the disciplines of painting, digital mixed media, sculpture, installation and performance. Her inspiration to be an artist began with the work that Matisse created (La Cirque) in the library of the Art Institute of Chicago. Paul Wieghardt (from the Bauhaus School in Germany), was her art teacher at SAIC. She was influenced by the Marisol, Claes Oldenburg and Jean Dubuffet. Her sculptures also reveal the influence of Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg.
