The bodice of this dress was made by individually chain linking vintage Whiting & Davis metalmesh in both gold and black. A painstaking process which took a week of full time work. Creating an Art Deco Erté inspired gown with vintage 1970s silk & lurex chiffon for the feather trimmed skirt. The trained skirt has a snap to elegantly lift the train for dancing and moving about. From the Victorian period to the 1950s, 60s & 70s western fashion has been utilizing Indian sari silks in their designs. When speaking with our factory manager in India about sourcing real metal lamé he told us about a collection of antique sari his mother and aunts had in storage. We immediately knew we had to see them. Unlike modern sari and other metallic textiles which are woven with a more cost effective polyester fiber. The vintage sari silk is woven with real metal threads. These looms have to be manned by hand and it is a slow and laborious process which no one wants to resurrect. Each piece is made one at a time, utilizing the borders of the sari to maximum impact. Because many of the textiles are half a century old a few minor imperfections may be present. Think of these as time keepers and story tellers of the colorful Indian weddings and festivals they were worn to in their past lives.
