Assemblage Grey Gradient - is a unique work by Volker Kuhn, hand-torn with strips of handmade paper, individually painted, relief-like composition (70 cm diameter), framed 118 x 116 cm, signed in middle lower front, stamp of certificate on back.

In the middle there is still chaos, but towards the outside the forms gradually calm down and gain more and more structure. The new assemblages by Volker Kuhn – he calls them leaf pictures (Blätterbilder) initially draw the viewer's gaze to the center where the small pieces of paper stretch wildly towards the light like flower petals in order to form ordered rows in the further course. They are relief-like, mostly round, monochrome compositions that suggest movement through their arrangement and form. At the beginning of this group of works, which Volker Kuhn began around 2010, there was a strip of handmade paper. The rest of a straight cut passe-partout inspired the artist and he began to manually tear the individual parts so that they stand up with a small point that points upwards in the finished work and catches the light, while the broad side is glued to the background of the picture . This process is done by working with the paint. To do this, each individual element is picked up again and provided with acrylic paint, which also hardens the paper and at the same time serves as an adhesive. In this way, between two and six thousand hand-torn paper parts are processed on a space of seventy centimeters in diameter. A large frame with a wide white space enhances the effect of the individual objects. Orange, green, blue, red, white and yellow circles shine towards the viewer with great luminosity.

Volker Kuhn
German artist Volker Kuhn was born in 1948 and studied Sculpture at the Bremen Academy of Arts, where he was honoured with the Young Advancement Award, given by the Bremen Senate.
He is well known for his series of ‘Art in Boxes’ three-dimensional wall pieces populated by small "findings", miniature figures and animals. His sculptures are informed by ‘object art’ and the work of assemblage artist Joseph Cornwell. References to Dada, Surrealist and Pop Art can also be identified within his vibrant and humorous wall sculptures. His assemblages are framed as pictures and arranged in boxes like tiny stage sets or tableaux. Kuhn's works are unique, skilfully crafted and imaginative.
