"Un-stretched Longitude", contemporary, cityscape, window, red, oil painting

About the Item

"Un-stretched Longitude" by Alexandra Rozenman is a large, mysterious cityscape in oil paint on canvas measuring 72 x 72 x 2.5 inches. Painted in the late 90’s this piece is one of the largest shown by the artist at Clark Gallery at that time. In this vivid square painting a big, mysterious and unreal creature with wings and feathers faces us. She is sitting on the dark blue roof wrapped up by darkness. There’s a half-open window. You can feel the breeze because a few maple leaves are flying around the painting, slowing the pace of time. Above the dark part of the window and also to the left a colorful old European-looking city with tiled roofs shows itself, with narrow streets and old-fashioned streetlights. There the sun is shining. The bird is waiting for something to happen, staring at us. She knows something that we don’t. On the right side of the canvas you can see red wallpaper, some more maple leaves and a bowl filled with a unrecognizable red substance and surrounded by tiny insects. Did somebody forget a strawberry jam on a windowsill last night? This painting reminds us that there is a lot of beauty in everyday life that goes unnoticed because we pass by, ignoring it. It quilts magic out of ordinary and invites each one of us to ad a few stitches. Signed and dated in the back. Alexandra Rozenman immigrated to America from the Soviet Union in 1989. Russian, European and American myths of national destiny and private identity take on a utopian dimension as she absorbs and expresses the psychology of otherness as fundamental aspects of her own identity. She wants her art to be like a well-worn military wool blanket that gives you warmth, love, and history. Whatever degree of abstraction defines my thinking and visual self-identification it has all to do with the search for my own image in a great existential sea of sweeping changes. Rozenman is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

Alexandra Rozenman’s “One-way to Paris” 16 x 20 x 2.5 oil on canvas painting is a part of her landscape series where she plays with reality and abstraction inside the familiar place. The painting is a well thought- through abstract painting that symbolizes both departure and arrival. The dramatic combination of blues and beautiful browns in geometrical interposition of forms gives us a feeling of going away, departure, speed, light, and serendipity filled with expectations and purifying beauty. The light of dreamy suns above the horizon is suddenly deep green and energizes and calms the senses at the same time. We wonder thinking about the future, a highway that magically finds a way to transform into one lonely Paris street light...

Alexandra Rozenman’s “Redon’s Spirit” is a 36 x 24 x 2.5 oil painting on canvas. It is a part of her on-going series called “Beasts and Beauties”. Big and heavy sky filled with white and grey clouds, white moon and a flock of flying away birds fills two thirds of the painting creating a feeling of weight, time and an open space. There is a magic divider under it – something that is part umbrella, part inside-out tent, and part ships sails. It keeps us from something bad and powerful like a Devil’s Eye...
