Yiching Chen
Traditional painter Yiching Chen creates floral artworks that are delicate but exquisitely detailed, brimming with beautiful blooms that draw the viewer into whimsical scenes. Chen’s figurative and landscape paintings are made using a Japanese pictorial technique known as Nihonga. She is one of the artists credited with keeping this centuries-old painting style alive.
Chen was born in Pingtung in Southern Taiwan in 1975. She studied computer science at the University of Taichung and started pursuing a teaching career in 1998. However, in 1999, Chen took a course in Japanese Nihonga and fell in love with painting. She moved to Japan to learn more about the technique, and, in 2000, began studying at the Kyoto University of the Arts. One of her teachers was the prominent Nihonga painter Takao Yamazaki.
In 2003, Chen earned the grand prize at the Shōhaku Art Museum in Nara, Japan. She graduated with a master of fine arts degree in 2004 and held her first solo exhibition at Kyoto’s Nasic Square that year. She then relocated to Lyon, France, to continue her art studies. Chen won the top prize at a painting and sculpture salon in Décines-Charpieu, France, in 2006. She moved to Paris in 2007 and won a bronze medal at a painting salon the following year.
Chen has exhibited in Japan and Europe, as well as in Taiwan and Hong Kong. She continues to live in Paris and since 2011 has taught Nihonga at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts. In 2012, she wrote the first French book on the subject of Nihonga, Découvrir la peinture nihon-ga : Art traditionnel japonais. The book has become one of the leading references on the style.

- CELLO IN THE SNOW - oil, enamel, glazed ceramic and canvas on panel, texturalBy Eleanor AldrichLocated in Signal Mountain, TNA cello is held up between the legs of its accompanying musician in a snowy landscape. Snow has collected on the protruding bits of Cello and on the tops of the musician's knees. Though we can't see the face of the musician, we see their bare arms, folding upwards, as if they have buried their face in their hands. -- Building on her previous show, Main Squeeze, which featured bodies pressing through the grid of lawn chairs, in “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings...Category

- ON THE ICE - Textural figure painting - Oil and Enamel on Canvas Red, Polka-DotBy Eleanor AldrichLocated in Signal Mountain, TNIn the series of paintings titled “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings and small, overfilled sculptures. Aldrich uses thick materials that protrude from the surface, reminding the viewer that the paintings are not only physical objects in themselves, but also create the illusion of the picture. The work employs a risky excess of material that borders on uncontrollable; becoming metaphoric for barely controlled femininity, the attraction and repulsion of materialism, and the body pressing against constraints. The figures in the paintings are seen from behind or have turned away. The viewer is put in a place of questioning whether they are a voyeur or a co-viewer with the figure of something deeper in the picture plane. The full body paintings of young women based on Nancy Drew...Category

- Green Sexy Snowboarder_2021_Jane Maxwell, Female Figurative Collage, Mixed MediaBy Jane MaxwellLocated in 326 N Coast Hwy. | Laguna Beach, CAJANE MAXWELL "Green Sexy Snowboarder" Mixed Media with Resin on Panel 58" x 27" Jane Maxwell’s artwork approaches the female body with an affectionate and celebratory feminist perspective. Extending her focus on female empowerment and fashion to swimwear, Maxwell’s silhouettes emerge from the dimensional, textural, backgrounds clad in the vestiges of paper ephemera. Maintaining texture through layering and building up the surface, the enigmatic quality of the works is reiterated by Maxwell’s use of ads and billboard materials that reveal words and phrases that tease us with alluring allusions. The anonymous figures have a definitive flair and attitude, keeping us at a distance as they swim and sunbathe, while pulling us further into their multi-dimensional narratives. Jane Maxwell's current work largely focuses on women, body image and the feminine ideal. Her collages are deeply layered works, combining color, texture and text that surround and become the female figure. Maxwell's artistic voice grew out of a passion for vintage materials, modern fashion and design - mingled with a deep fascination for pop culture and female icons. In the late 1990's she studied mixed media at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at the Decordova Museum School in Lincoln, Massachusetts. She graduated with a BA in Literature from Middlebury College...Category
