Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Elder
The School Room - Flemish 19th century art interior genre oil painting children

circa 1850

About the Item

This charming Flemish genre oil painting is by Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Elder. Painted circa 1850 it is a fine realist genre scene of the interior of a school room, a topic Braekeleer favoured with similar paintings such as The Lesson, The Pupil etc. The School Room is painted in great detail with the young pupils attempting to read or write and one young boy being assisted by a beautiful young woman. A further pupil waits at the master's desk while he attends to his quill. One young girl seems to have abandoned her studies for knitting! A range of notes and items hang on the wall. A number system and alphabet with possible signature and inscription are on blackboards. A really colourful, lively and characterful painting which is beautifully lit by the large leaded window often seen in his works. Provenance. MacConnal-Mason & Son, London label verso. Condition. Oil on canvas, 32 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a fine carved period frame, 40 inches by 36 inches and in good condition. Ferdinand de Braekeleer (1792-1883), sometimes spelled as Ferdinand de Braeckeleer, was a Flemish painter. He is known for his historical paintings and genre scenes and is called 'the Elder' to distinguish him from his son with the same name (Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Younger), who was also a painter. Ferdinand was born in a poor family. After his parents died he was admitted to the Art school for orphans of Mathieu Ignace van Brée in Antwerp. He continued his education at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts of Antwerp. His paintings received several prizes in 1809 and 1811. In 1813 he made his reputation at the Salon de Paris with his work Aeneas die Anchises redt uit de brand van Troje ("Aeneas saving Anchises from the fire of Troy"). Early on, De Braekeleer decided that he wanted to make a living as a painter and he tried out several genres to find out which one would most likely bring him most success. In addition to historical paintings, he also painted religious paintings, such as St. Sebastiaan for the Church of Our Lady of the Vineyard in Wijnegem (current location unknown). He also painted a number of genre scenes of villagers based in cottages, schools, markets etc. At the Antwerp art exhibition of 1819 he exhibited four paintings, of which Tobias bezorgt het zicht aan zijn vader terug (Tobias Restoring his Father's Sight) won him the Dutch Prix de Rome in the category of historical paintings. This prize provided him with a scholarship that allowed him to study in Italy to improve his skills. He spent 1821 and 1822 in Italy. Together with his tutor Van Brée (who joined him in Rome) he visited several Italian cities, including Naples, Ancona, Firenze, Bologna and Venice. Fascinated by these Italian cities and their landscape, he filled a sketch book with crayon drawings of landscapes and city views, which is currently on display in the Bibliotheque Royale Albert (Royal Albert Library) in Brussels. After his return to Belgium, De Braekeleer lived in his home town Antwerp. He created works inspired by the old Flemish masters. He primarily focused on historical paintings. One of these is the painting De Citadel van Antwerpen na het bombardement van 1832 (The citadel of Antwerp after the bombardment of 1832). Partially because of his paintings about the 1832 bombardments by the Dutch, he became an influential artist in Belgium after the independence of Belgium. His two sons, Ferdinand the Younger (1828 - 1857) and Henri de Braekeleer (1840 - 1888) followed in their father's footsteps and also became painters. His nephew Adriaan Ferdinand de Braekeleer (1818 - 1904), was also a painter. Besides his sons, he tutored several other painters who became influential, such as Jan August Hendrik Leys and Ernest Slingeneyer.

  • Full length Portrait of Jeannie Netter, wearing a Burgundy dress
    By Fedor Encke
    Located in West Sussex, GB
Fedor Encke (1851-1926) – German Full length Portrait of Jeannie Netter, standing in an interior, wearing a Burgundy Velvet Dress holding a Pink Rose Oil on canvas :85 ¾ x 50 ¼ in. Frame :103 x 67 ¼ in. Signed & inscribed ‘New York’. Circa 1910 Jeannie Netter was an American born musician and song-writer but was mostly merited for her sculpture having been taught by the Russian artist Bernstamm. Fedor Encke was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. Younger brother of Erdmann Encke who was a sculptor, Encke was the illegitimate grandson of King Frederick Wilhelm II of Prussia and Mistress Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau. Fedor studied under Karl Gussow in Berlin and then went on to study in Rome and Paris. Although he set up a studio in Berlin during the 1880’s, he seems to have travelled regularly between Paris and New York painting many American Society sitters, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Encke’s portrait of Roosevelt dressed in Rough Rider uniform, originally hung in the dining room of the White House and is now at the Presidents place of birth, Segamore Hill, New York. This portrait was also published as the frontispiece of ‘The Rough Riders’ by C. Scribners&Sons, 1899. Encke was in Paris in 1902 and painted the two banking giants, John H. Harjes and J.P. Morgan both having their portraits painted at the same time. To try and finish Morgan’s painting Encke hired a young photographer named Edward Steichen to take Morgan’s picture as a kind of aid memoir to minimize the sitting time. This photograph and the painting that resulted from it caused a considerable stir because of the uncompromising pose of Morgan. The portrait became synonymous with the new capitalism. Encke seems to have been very well connected socially and painted for many members of the European nobility as a result. Encke died in 1926. Works in Museums: Segamore Hill, New York (Portrait of Theodore Roosevelt) National Portrait Gallery America; Smithsonian; Brooklyn Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art.
