Lori Van Houten
Stained Silk (Delusional Flowers) : Floral Abstract Photograph on Handmade Paper

2004

About the Item

Abstracted landscape of flowers in a field in pastel tones and details of lush burgundy "Stained Silk (Delusional Flowers)" by Lori Van Houten pigment print on mitsumata paper, edition of 5 26 x 49 inches unframed, 30 x 54.5 x 2 inches in light metal frame and non-reflective glass Wire installed on the back for easy hanging Lori Van Houten’s work consists of large, horizontal, photo-based works on handmade paper. Each piece makes use of both overlay and juxtaposition, and starts with an underlying image of botanicals and other organic shapes which is generally formed from several related images photographed at the same site. The underlying photomontage is covered with a textile image that serves as both a concealing and revealing element in the process. These layers are in turn combined with layers of additional photographs, fragments of photographs, herbarium samples and other imagery, all interacting to form the final piece. In these complex arrangements, Van Houten’s work blurs the distinctions between the real, the illusive, and the documentation of both. The unique, matte texture of this paper appears as though the images are printed on a delicate fabric. About the Artist: My current work consists of large photo-based works on paper. Each print incorporates nature-based photographs produced in camera, combined with selected found imagery to form each multi-layered piece. The work is produced by computer and consists of a complex layering and interacting of images and involves a continual back and forth process of erasing and adding to achieve the final whole. Each piece begins with an underlying image which is generally formed from several related images photographed at the same site. The underlying image is chosen for it’s basic forms and color and often suggests the final feeling of the piece although often all three elements are obscured by the time the work is complete. The underlying photomontage is covered with a textile image that serves as both a concealing and revealing element in the process. These layers are in turn combined with layers of additional photographs, fragments of photographs, herbarium samples and other imagery all interacting to form the final piece. The fabrics are selected for their depiction of botanical subjects and come from historical periods when this work flourished. Some of the series such as Stained Silks include fabrics of the 13th c. from the regions bordering the silk routes. Field Notes incorporates western lace imagery. The herbarium samples generally come from the same regions as the textiles and are often manipulated and used for the purposes of “drawing” on and in the composition. The selection of the various elements and images is both research and the structure on which each piece is built.

Robert Funk’s photographs of elaborate landscaping redefine what Street Art is. Street Art from the rich is to be found on every corner in Naples. It's a city with perhaps more flowers than weeds. Hedge Fun is a series that celebrates the landscaping commissioned by well-heeled homeowners, high-end condos and ritzy commercial establishments. Shrubs, bushes, and trees are transformed from organic shapes into man-made graphics. They become stripped of surrounding detail to the point that they become abstract in their impact. On any given day in South Florida, there is an army of landscaping trucks with gardeners and groundsmen working meticulously to beautify the street scape...
