Robert Hite
After the Smoke: Modern Black & White Photograph of an Old-Fashioned Interior

2018

US$3,500

About

Black and white still life photograph of an old-fashioned interior filled with smoke and vines archival pigment print, edition of 10 40 x 30 inches, 49 x 39 inches in dark grey painted wood frame with 8-ply mat and non-glare glass This contemporary black and white photograph is part of Robert Hite's 2018 'A Distant Embrace' series. Here the photographer captures light hitting a mysterious cloud of smoke over an iron rod bed frame in an old-fashioned interior. The white cloud of smoke contrasts against a heavily darkened interior. Straw piled on the empty bed and vines that encroach into the room, suggest the house is abandoned or imagined. The black and white photograph is complimented with an 8-ply white mat and a custom-made dark grey painted wood frame with non-glare glass. There is wire on the back for installation. More about the work and artist: Robert Hite’s artistic vision, which encompasses sculpture, painting and photography, has long been rooted in themes of the home. His sculptures of humble dwellings made of reclaimed wood and metal are reflective of his small-town upbringing in the racially divided American rural south and his preoccupations with global disenfranchisement. The sculpture, ranging in size from 18 inches to 18 feet, are almost creature-like with their unique, dilapidated characteristics. Those sculptures are further personified in a series of ‘portraits’ entitled Imagined Histories, when Hite photographs the houses in a carefully chosen landscape. A Distant Embrace goes a step further as Hite crafts narrative portraits of actual people inside a crumbling house. Robert Hite was the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim fellowship for Fine Arts in 2014, and currently has an installation of sculpture and photography at the Albany International Airport through 2020. About the artist: Though Robert Hite's work deals in abstraction, images of structures, dwellings, and living spaces have become central to his pieces. Hite now works in photography, painting, and sculpture, although they often intersect through common imagery and sentiment. In 1997, Hite and his family moved to Esopus, NY, a small town in the Hudson Valley where he converted a 1840’s Methodist church into his home and studio. There he has created a productive artistic space for himself, and sometimes others. Selections from the Imagined Histories series incorporate whimsical architectural structures into the reality of the valley’s landscape. Hite builds small constructions in his studio resembling houses and towers and then places them in various locations near the Hudson River in Upstate New York. The result is a unique style of storytelling, opening up possibilities of exploring multiple narratives suggested by each image.
